Its not often that Arina Rodionova competes in WTA-sanctioned events, despite her previous capabilities aligning with "main" tournaments, and her decent performance in doubles. However, her tennis isn't as effective now. In the first round of the WTA 250 in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Australian player of Russian descent will face her former compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova. Alexandrova, from a different generation, undeniably performs better in singles compared to Rodionova. In 's-Hertogenbosch, the Russian player has won two previous tournaments, making her the reigning champion of the WTA 250 in southern Netherlands. Arina Rodionova In my opinion, Arina should stop playing Futures events and focus on the WTA series, where the Australian is yet to win a title. Last season, Rodionova secured seven ITF trophies, including one on grass. This is a significant achievement for a player whose ranking was quite low before these successes. Now, the Australian can break into the top 100 of the WTA rankings. This year, Arina started with "main" tournaments, which is the right strategy. However, she did not make any notable progress, except in Brisbane where she defeated Martina Trevisan and Sofia Kenin. In Hua Hin, the Australian reached the quarter-finals. Subsequently, a string of failures pushed Rodionova back to the Futures, where she reached the finals twice but lost to slightly stronger opponents, leading to a disheartening first-round defeat in the Roland-Garros qualifiers. In Surbiton, Rodionova played two matches on grass. Against Arina Rodionova, its crucial for Alexandrova to set her rhythm early and avoid relying on her opponent's mistakes. If the Russian shows good combination play and finishes rallies better, she should easily gain the upper hand in the first set and then see through the match comfortably. Head-to-Head In 2018, at the Qatar tournament, the Australian lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first qualifying match. Prediction: Arina Rodionova vs Ekaterina Alexandrova Alexandrova needs to play assertively from the outset to win the first set with class and subsequently take the second set gradually, potentially leveraging her serve. At Roland Garros, the only match where Świątek could have lost was against Naomi Osaka. Osaka was on the verge of victory, leading 5-2 in the third set but eventually lost 5-7, essentially gifting Świątek a place in the third round. In other matches at Roland Garros, the Polish tennis player performed excellently, with even Coco Gauff unable to win a set against her. In the battle for the French title, Iga needs to deliver a standard match against Jasmine Paolini to win on merit. If the Italian cannot skillfully place uncomfortable balls for attacking her opponent and loses in the serve battle, she might win a maximum of five games in this match. Head-to-Head The players have met on a clay-court futures event in Prague, where Świątek easily defeated Paolini, and at the US Open, where the Polish player lost only three games in the match. Theres no doubt that the Alcaraz vs. Sinner match is a top-tier fixture, but its crucial that the performance matches the billing. Carlos Alcaraz It hasnt been the best year in tennis for Alcaraz, largely due to injuries that hindered his ability to shape up for the clay season and other tournaments he missed. Nevertheless, the Spanish tennis player always aims to be ready for the Grand Slams. In previous years, Alcaraz started with titles, securing up to four accolades at the season's start on hard courts and working diligently on clay before transitioning to grass. He puts in strong performances at specific tournaments, but his form often dips in the seasons middle stretch, especially during the Asian tournaments and the year-end finals. This year, the Spanish tennis maestro won the Masters in Indian Wells and reached quarter-finals in Melbourne, Miami, and Madrid, where he surprisingly lost despite being the heavy favourite. Sinner has improved significantly in offensive play, with a better serve and other statistical parameters matching those of his top-5 ATP peers. This season, Sinners triumph in Melbourne, defeating all the top Russian players, his victory in Rotterdam (500), and Miami (1000) earned him impressive titles despite not facing exceedingly tough brackets. However, he met several challenging opponents where he had to play smartly to succeed. For instance, in 2023, de Minaur lost three finals but won one in Acapulco, where he passed a tough draw. However, at Queen's Club on grass, and on hard courts in Los Cabos and Toronto, the Aussie was outplayed. This season, de Minaur lost the decisive match for the trophy in Rotterdam, where he passed Sebastian Korda, Andrey Rublev, and Grigor Dimitrov, but Jannik Sinner was again stronger.
