Today, at the first grass tournament in Stuttgart, Serbian Hamad Medjedovic will face the Kazakhstani Alexander Bublik.
In 2024, ranked 131st in the world, Hamad Medjedovic has not been able to participate in many matches due to a hand injury, but he successfully passed the qualification at Roland Garros and reached the second round at the clay Masters in Rome. Additionally, the Serbian has shown good results on grass in 2023, passing the Wimbledon qualification last year and winning a set against O'Connell. This season, despite his low ranking, Medjedovic has demonstrated significant progress, winning 7 of his last 9 games, which suggests he might perform well at the upcoming tournament in Stuttgart. The first round in Stuttgart was successful for Hamad, who managed to defeat the Hungarian Fabian Marozan with a score of 6:7, 6:1, 6:4. Despite losing the first set on a tie-break, Medjedovic won most games on his serve and played excellently on the return, an important skill on grass. In each set, the Serbian showed a high percentage of points won on his serve (more than 75%), which was key to his success in this match.
Despite his youth and recent injuries, Medjedovic has already proven that he can compete with top players and is one of the most promising young talents. His ability to win tough matches, as shown in the first round in Stuttgart, indicates great potential and the possibility of further advancement in the tournament and the rankings.
Ranked 17th in the world, Alexander Bublik is known for his unpredictable style of play and strong serve, which is especially effective on grass. Last year, he won 9 matches on this surface, including a major tournament in Halle, where he defeated top tennis players. At the Stuttgart tournament, he skipped the first round due to being the third seed and starts the competition from the second round, where challenging opponents await him. At this year’s Roland Garros, Bublik advanced past Gregoire Barrere with a score of 6:4, 7:5, 6:3, but failed to progress past the second round, losing decisively to Jan-Lennard Struff (2:6, 2:6, 3:6), which confirmed his inconsistency on clay. Despite these setbacks, in Stuttgart, he is ready to demonstrate his best qualities, considering his previous successful experience on grass, which includes an impressive reach to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.
Currently, Bublik is in good form and motivated to prove that he can advance through the tournament draw, leveraging his strengths: a powerful forehand and baseline play.
The opponents have not previously played each other.
I expect a victory for Bublik, as grass is his favourite surface, on which the Kazakhstani clearly loves and knows how to play. Against his powerful serve, Medjedovic will find it extremely difficult, as the Serbian had problems with Marozan in the first round.
