Today, in the 3rd round of the Roland Garros Paris tournament, German Alexander Zverev will play against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor.
Ranked No. 4 in the world, Alexander Zverev continues his season successfully, showing excellent results on clay courts. This season, he has played 39 matches, winning 30 of them, with particularly strong performances on clay, securing 12 victories out of 15 matches.
His outstanding result of the year is the victory at the Rome Masters, where he defeated Chilean player Garín with a score of 6-4, 7-5 in the final. Ahead of Roland Garros, Zverev also showed good results, defeating Tabilo and Fritz with scores of 2-1 and 2-0 respectively.
At Roland Garros, Alexander started with an impressive win over Rafael Nadal, thrashing him 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, affirming his strong form and versatility on various surfaces. Zverev boasts one of the best backhands on the tour and is known for his powerful serve, allowing him to dominate in long rallies. His endurance and technical skills especially shine on clay courts. Continuing the tournament in the second round of Roland Garros, he confidently defeated David Goffin with a score of 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. Zverev demonstrated high class, realising 4 break points and not losing a single game on his serve.
Such level of play indicates his readiness for further challenges in the tournament and solidifies his position as one of the favourites for victory in Paris.
Ranked No. 25 in the world, Tallon Griekspoor has shown inconsistent results this season, with 17 wins and 12 losses in 2024. On clay courts, his statistics stand at 7 wins against 5 losses.
Despite unstable performances on slow surfaces, Griekspoor reached the semi-finals at the Rotterdam tournament, where he lost to Sinner with a score of 0-2. He continues to demonstrate confident play this season, including reaching the third round of Roland Garros, which is his best result at Grand Slam tournaments.
At Roland Garros, Griekspoor began his performance with a victory over Mackenzie McDonald with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, followed by a confident win over Luciano Darderi with a result of 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. In these matches, Tallon showcased excellent serving, delivering 15 aces in the match against Darderi and realising four break points, losing just one game on his serve.
Although Griekspoor prefers slow surfaces, his game is characterised by a good serve and net play, as well as the ability to confidently hold in long rallies and execute quality drop shots. In preceding tournaments in Geneva and Rome, he also showed good results, defeating opponents like Shapovalov and Eubanks, indicating his improving form on clay.
Alexander Zverev and Tallon Griekspoor have met 4 times in various tournaments, with the German winning 3 times. Their first encounter was at Wimbledon on June 29, 2021, where Zverev claimed a convincing victory with a score of 3-0 in sets.
In February 2023, at the Rotterdam tournament, Griekspoor managed to take revenge, winning the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. However, the subsequent two matches went in Zverev’s favour: In August 2023, at the Toronto tournament, he won with a score of 2-0 (6-4, 7-6), and then he repeated this success in March 2024 in Indiana, also winning with a score of 2-0 (7-6, 6-3).
Zverev is in superb form, as evidenced by his first-round match with the legend Nadal. Alexander played incredibly well in defence and powerfully attacked, going into the match with Griekspoor without losing a single set.
I expect a confident victory for the German with a handicap of (-6) games.
