PGL Wallachia 2024: Season 1. Play-offs. Upper bracket. Finishing match of the game day and indeed the main clash of the entire first game day of the tournament, as we await the Western Europe derby, a battle of teams that dominated almost the entire last season. This match will close the first day of the play-offs, along with the first round of the upper bracket.
Gaimin Gladiators will play against Team Liquid
The team from Western Europe had quite an interesting journey. On the first game day, they faced Team Secret, their regional mates, and it turned out to be a one-sided match. Despite Gaimin Gladiators having subpar performances in previous tournaments, their current level is still higher than Team Secret, so a 2:0 victory wasn't surprising at all.
Next came the clash against Team Spirit. Two teams that had been underperforming in recent tournaments played against each other, and Gaimin Gladiators came out stronger, although it took more effort than in the first round. In the third round, Team Falcons awaited them, who turned out to be stronger, winning 2:1.
In the race for the play-offs, Gaimin Gladiators got relatively lucky in the draw, coming up against BOOM Esports, arguably the weakest team. They still managed to win 2:1, bringing their overall record to 3-1, but not without a struggle.
For this Western Europe team, it's a familiar story: a very poor start in the group stage, only to then claw their way out of trouble and manage to reach the play-offs. Yes, there have been times when they didn't make it to the play-offs, even this season. But in the PGL Wallachia Season 1, they did make it.
Team Liquid's first match was reassuring, as they confidently defeated G2 Invictus Gaming, making everything seem promising. However, they then lost to Xtreme Gaming, which is rather normal for this tournament. The real shock came in the next match when they lost 0:2 to Shopify Rebellion, something unimaginable before the tournament.
That sent them to a 1:2 record, but they still managed to qualify for the play-offs by defeating MOUZ 0:2. In their fifth match, they faced another Western Europe team, Team Secret, and once again claimed a confident 2:0 victory, setting up a play-off clash against Gaimin Gladiators, another battle with a bitter rival.
Gaimin Gladiators and Team Liquid have played 25 matches against each other. Both teams have shared the wins equally, with 12 wins each, and one match ended in a draw. This season, however, Gaimin Gladiators have only won one encounter, whereas Team Liquid has secured four wins.
Betcity rates Gaimin Gladiators as the favourites for this match, with odds of 1.64 for their victory. Team Liquid's victory stands at 2.25. Personally, picking an outcome feels rather hazardous, as this is arguably the most conflicting match of the first round of the upper bracket play-offs. However, I would back GG to win, taking W1.
