On Wednesday Getafe will host Atletico Madrid in the 36th round of the Spanish Primera Division. The 'Colchoneros' have won three matches in a row and have almost secured their spot in the Champions League, while their city rivals are comfortably positioned in the middle of the table.
This season, Getafe not only retained their spot in La Liga but also demonstrated that with Jose Bordalas’s sound defensive tactics and talented players like Borja Mayoral and Mason Greenwood, they can compete for a finish in the upper half of the table. Currently sitting in 10th place, the 'Azulones' are no longer vying for European competition spots after suffering two consecutive defeats—against Athletic Bilbao (0-2) and Cádiz (1-0)—decided by a lone goal from Rubén Alcaraz in the 35th minute.
Osasuna, Sevilla, and Alaves are just three points behind the hosts, who will be content to return to their home ground: it is in the walls of the Coliseum that the Blue-Greens collected 29 points in 17 matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding 17 (eighth-best in the division).
In the final rounds, besides Atletico, Madrid will face Alaves and Mallorca. Getafe’s squad will be without Borja Mayoral, who scored 15 goals in 27 matches, as well as Mauro Arambarri (cruciate ligament rupture) and defender Iglesias (shoulder surgery) – all of whom are recovering in the infirmary. Additionally, Duarte will be absent on Wednesday evening due to a shoulder injury. Mason Greenwood, on the other hand, is having an excellent season after his return to professional activity (8 goals, 6 assists in La Liga) and will take the lead in attack.
After two consecutive matches without scoring, Jose Bordalas might also field Juanmi Latasa as a forward, while Ilaix Moriba, on loan from RB Leipzig, will provide fresh legs in midfield.
Atletico Madrid has not been at their best throughout the season, but the 'Colchoneros' remain the only club to beat Real Madrid in the current campaign. Having reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League (eliminated by Borussia Dortmund) and the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey (defeated by Athletic Bilbao), the 'Colchoneros' have yet to guarantee a top-four finish in the league.
A win on Wednesday will be sufficient to achieve this goal, as the visitors secured a hard-fought victory over Celta Vigo last weekend courtesy of a splendid strike by Rodrigo De Paul (1-0). This was the third consecutive triumph for Diego Simeone’s men, who had previously defeated Mallorca (0-1) and Athletic Bilbao (3-1). However, the capital club has won just six out of 17 away matches in the national championship.
In this regard, the 'Colchoneros' are only seventh in the overall standings (a total of 21 points in 17 matches, 23 goals scored, and 21 conceded). Thomas Lemar has long been sidelined by injury, as have Molina and Vitolo. Frenchman Antoine Griezmann (13 goals, 6 assists) and his strike partner Morata (14 goals) will undoubtedly start, as will Argentines Correa (9 goals, 2 assists) and De Paul (scorer of the only goal against Celta last weekend). The Argentine has netted twice in the past three rounds— as many times as he did in the previous 48!
The trio of central defenders will, as usual, be Witsel, Giménez, and Hermoso, while Jan Oblak will cement the goal.
The teams shared the spoils (3-3) in a completely dramatic match of the first round. The two previous away meetings with Getafe were claimed by the 'Colchoneros'.
Getafe has already achieved their main task this season—retaining their spot in La Liga, while Atletico has yet to secure a Champions League finish. Diego Simeone’s side has picked up good form in recent weeks, winning three in a row—why not extend the series in the derby? Moreover, the hosts are weakened by numerous injuries, so I am betting on a routine victory for the 'Colchoneros' by 1-2 goals.
