On Tuesday, 14th May as part of the 36th round of the Spanish La Liga, Real Madrid will host Alavés at their homeground. Real Madrid, famously known as "Los Blancos", have officially won the championship title and trounced Granada 4:0 last weekend. Meanwhile, Alavés penned a dramatic tie against Girona.
The showdown is scheduled to take place at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.
Having celebrated the 36th Spanish championship title in their history on the streets of Madrid over the weekend, Real Madrid are revelling in their current campaign on all fronts: the hosts have only lost one match in the national league (Atletico in September) and have made it to the Champions League final, where they will face Borussia Dortmund on the 1st of June. It is evident that the remaining league matches will be used to prepare for such an essential event and last Saturday's thrashing of Granada in Andalusia (0:4) was proof of this.
Despite many changes to the line-up after a challenging match against Bayern, Ancelotti still achieved his aim: Brahim Diaz delivered a compelling performance with a brace, while Fran Garcia and Arda Guler also chipped in with goals. The Los Blancos have achieved commendable results at the Santiago Bernabeu this season, garnering 47 points in 17 home games, with 15 victories and two draws.
The aim for Alavés this season was not to clinch the title, but to stay in the elite division. The White-and-Blues have more than met their set task and are likely to finish in the top-10, currently trailing Getafe by just one point. Over the last weekend, the Basque team had their fourth tour without a defeat, tying Girona 2:2 in the 99th minute through the efforts of Jon Guridi.
Before that, Luis Garcia's charges amassed 9 points in three matches, beating Atletico Madrid (2:0), Celta (3:0), and Valencia at Mestalla (0:1). It's important to highlight that Alavés has struggled on the road, picking up only 14 points in 17 matches away from home. In addition to Real Madrid, Alavés will be playing against Getafe and Las Palmas in the remaining tours, hence they can play freely without worrying about the results.
In the first leg, Real Madrid snatched a victory thanks to a last-gasp goal from Lucas Vasquez (0:1). In the last four meetings, the white-and-blue have been unable to secure any points against the Whites.
In anticipation of the Champions League final fixture against Borussia Dortmund, Ancelotti will surely try out various game strategies and give some playing time to the closest reserves; however, the gap in class between the two teams is too wide to entertain the idea of an upset. Alavés are winding down their season without any tournament motivations and are less likely to put up a fair fight at Santiago Bernabeu, hence my bet is on a win for the favourites with a handicap of -1,5.
Having scored 43 goals in 17 home matches (the best tally in the division), and as evidenced by the last match against Granada, Real Madrid have shown that they are relentless even after officially clinching the title. I would place my bet on Real Madrid's individual total over 2.5.
Real Madrid will assert control from the first whistle and begin methodically dissecting their opponent's defence. My bet is on an individual total of over 6.5 corners for the Whites.
Alavés will be on the back foot for most of the match, which means they are likely to rack up a higher yellow card count.
I would place my bet on a 3:0 victory in favour of Real Madrid.
