On Saturday, 27 April, within the scope of the 33rd Spanish La Liga Tour, Las Palmas will be hosting Girona. The visitors are running a fantastic campaign, and their ticket for the Champions League is nearly guaranteed, whereas "the islanders" are located at the 13th position and 12 points ahead of the relegation zone.
Las Palmas: Valles; Suarez, Coco, Marmol, S Cardona; Park, Munoz, Perrone, K Rodriguez, Munir; Sandro.
Girona: Gazzaniga; E Garcia, D Lopez, Blind, Gutierrez; Solis, A Garcia; Couto, Martin, Savio; Dovbyk.
The encounter will take place in Las Palmas at Gran Canaria Stadium.
In the first half of the season, Las Palmas had to earn as many points as possible to avoid end-of-season nerves – and this happened. As a result, having amassed 37 points, which is 12 more than Cadiz who is 18th, the team aim to retain their position in the top division for the next year. Yet, the yellow-and-bluish appear to have run out of steam recently, as indicated by their dreadful series of five La Liga losses in a row: failures came from Athletic Bilbao (0:2), Almeria (0:1), Barcelona (1:0), Sevilla (0:2), and Celta Vigo last weekend (4:1).
Additionally, Los Amarillos haven't clinched any wins in the championship since 10 February, accumulating solely two points over the past eight tours. Las Palmas demonstrated relative strength at home this season, earning 22 points in 16 matches before their fans' eyes (11th highest result in the division).
Unlike Las Palmas, Girona cannot afford to lose pace at the season's final part. The Catalonians are within the top-3 tournament table and, for the first time in history, stand a chance to secure their Champions League spot. Moreover, a victory on Saturday would allow the Catalans to preliminarily surpass Barcelona in the combat for the second place. Last weekend, the "white-crimsons" thrashed Cadiz by the scoreline 4:1 following a painful defeat from Atletico Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano (3:1).
It's worthy of note that in the last five clashes away from home, the white-wine-reds were defeated five times, but on aggregate they hold the fourth place in terms of earned away points (27 points in 16 encounters, 25 goals scored, 23 conceded). A major duel for the team will be held the next weekend, when Barcelona will visit Girona; after that, only Villarreal and Valencia remain as formidable rivals.
In the first leg, the Catalans managed to win over Cadiz by 1:0 at home, but the "islanders" themselves haven't triumphed over the Catalonians in the last nine head-to-head meetings.
Girona must get a win this weekend and surpass Barça in the race for the silver medals, although the recent away form of the Catalan side gives fans a reason for concern: the white-wine-reds suffered five consecutive away defeat. However, Las Palmas have virtually ceased playing in the remaining tours and have already started contemplating the forthcoming holiday. I believe, the visitors will cut the series of failures and take all three points.
Las Palmas have scored only one (!) goal in the last five tours – this is the worst record in La Liga amongst all teams. I confidently predict the team's Individual Total Goals Under 1 (ITU 1).
Girona will take over the initiative from the first minutes and will begin to delicately pick the opponent's defence apart on the flanks. I reckon that the Catalonians' Individual Total Corners Over 4.5 (ITCO 4.5).
Most of the match, Las Palmas will spend in defence, hence, they will be forced to foul frequently. I'm betting on Las Palmas to win on yellow cards.
I'll reckon an Exact Score of 0:2 in favour of Girona.
