On Monday, 11 March, within the framework of the 28th matchday of the Spanish Primera, Almería will host Sevilla on their field. The home team is lingering at the bottom of the league table with only nine points, while the visitors hold the 14th position and have practically secured their safety from relegation.
Almería is unlikely to remain in La Liga next season, much to their fans' dismay. La Union haven't won a single match this season and are the only team with such a record in the top five European Leagues. What's worse, Las Rayistas trail the 17th place Celta by 15 points – their chances of survival are practically nonexistent. Following three consecutive league draws – with Athletic Bilbao (0:0), Granada (1:1) and Atletico Madrid at home (2:2) – Almería fell to Celta (1:0) last weekend due to a second-half goal from Óscar Mingueza. It might not come as a surprise that Gaiska Garitano's men have the worst home record in their division: a measly seven points from 13 games in front of their fans, having scored 12 goals and conceded 23.
Mozambican left-back Langa, who was sent off last weekend, will serve his suspension on Monday evening, while Koné and Suárez are both injured. Last week the medical staff cleared Ramazani, Leo Baptistao (4 goals), and Radovanovic to participate in the upcoming match. Ex-Castilla (Real Madrid B) star Sergio Arribas (6 goals, 2 assists this season) is sure to leave the team at the end of the season, but he is currently their main offensive force. Head coach Garitano is unlikely to make many changes compared to the line-up against Celta, but Langa's absence will open up an opportunity for Álex Pozo to play as left-back.
It took Sevilla a while to pull out of their prolonged crisis this season. After being stuck in the lower half of the league table, the current Europa League holders have only lost once in their last six league matches with a satisfactory record of three wins and two draws. Los Andalusias came out on top against Rayo Vallecano away (1:2), Atletico Madrid at home (1:0), and Real Sociedad last weekend (3:2). Last season, the Red and Whites finished 12th in La Liga, which was their lowest finish since being relegated in the 1999-2000 season. This makes surpassing this result a key objective for the remainder of the current campaign. Quique Flores' men have collected just 10 points from 13 away matches, managing only 2 victories, and in their last two games on the road, they were defeated by Real Madrid (1:0) and drew with Valencia (0:0).
The Sevilla infirmary continues to be full: on Monday, the coaching staff will have to do without Argentinians Acuña (left-back) and winger Lamela (scoring 2 goals in 9 appearances), Belgian striker Lukebakio (2 league goals), Frenchman Aguemé, on loan from Inter for the second half of the season, Mariano Díaz, defensive midfielder Gudelj, experienced midfielder Joan Jordán, and injured Brazilian centre back Marcao. On a positive note: Ocampos and midfielder Sou are likely to return to the field following suspensions. Moroccan Youssef En-Nesyri (9 goals), who scored twice against Real Sociedad, will lead the attack, assisted in the final third by Isaac Romero.
Almería suffered a 5:1 defeat to Sevilla in the first round earlier this season but clinched a 2:1 victory in their home meeting last year.
Will Almería win at least one match before their exit from La Liga? This is the question that all La Union fans have been musing over in recent weeks. Sevilla, aiming for a top-10 finish, is in great form and eager to consolidate their success after a 3:2 victory over Real Sociedad last weekend. I believe that Quique Flores' men will have no difficulties on Monday evening and will secure a victory over the underdog as they did in the first leg.
