On Wednesday, June 12, Eibar will host Real Oviedo in the second-leg match of the Segunda Division playoffs. After the two contenders for promotion to La Liga settled for a goalless draw last week, the outcome of the contest will be decided in Eibar.
The match will take place in Eibar at the Municipal Stadium.
Concluding the championship on a high note with three wins in the last five rounds - against Amorebieta (5:0), Cartagena (1:0), and Real Oviedo (4:3) – the Basques were not far from becoming champions. Finishing just three points behind Leganés and Valladolid, who secured second place, Eibar almost returned to the elite division without going through the playoffs. In the first match against Oviedo, Eibar managed to hold their ground, preventing the opponent from gaining an advantage on their home turf (0:0).
Something that surely won't please the home fans: the team has failed to progress past the playoff semi-finals in the last two seasons. However, under Joseba Etxeberria's guidance, they have won all six of their last matches across all competitions after a defeat to Burgos in March. It's important to note that Eibar has kept three clean sheets in the last five home games, scoring 19 goals in their previous seven.
After being relegated from La Liga, the Asturian side spent 11 years in the Segunda, eight years in the third division, and four years in the fourth. Last season, Real Oviedo struggled to secure 6th place in the Segunda table, reaching the playoffs. Now, the visitors will have to spring a surprise to advance to the next round. The green and whites could not secure even a minimal advantage in the first leg against Eibar, despite having more shots on goal (8 against 6).
Furthermore, Oviedo's performance away from home has been less than stellar; they lost two consecutive away matches – to Espanyol (2:1) and Eibar (4:3). They only managed to rank 13th in the Segunda's overall away points standings. Nevertheless, Luis Carrion's side kept three clean sheets in their last six games across all competitions.
In the last Segunda season, the teams exchanged home victories, and the first play-off match ended in a goalless draw.
With the support of their home crowd, Eibar is expected to win this match and advance to the play-off final on Sunday, especially considering that Oviedo is still on a two-match losing streak away from home. The green and whites failed to breach Eibar's compact defence on their own turf; it's hard to imagine them succeeding in a place where they haven't won once in the 21st century. My prediction is a triumph for the blue and whites.
Eibar boasts a solid defence, having conceded just once in their last four matches. The hosts are unlikely to risk an open game in such an important fixture, so I'm betting on Real Oviedo's individual total under 1 goal.
In the first match, these teams managed just six corners combined. Therefore, we shouldn't expect an abundance of corners in the return leg either (total under 8.5).
Both teams will step onto the pitch with the sole aim of getting the required result at any cost, so I’m placing a bet on the total yellow cards over 3.5.
I'm betting on a 1:0 scoreline in favour of Eibar.
