On Saturday, 18 May, in the 37th round of the Spanish La Liga, Deportivo Alavés will host Getafe. The Basques enter the weekend occupying the 11th spot in the table, while the visitors are just one point behind and could finish in the upper half for the first time in many years with a win.
The match will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz at the Mendizorrotza Stadium.
Returning to La Liga last summer after a brief stint in the lower divisions, Alavés has fully achieved their goal for this season by securing a comfortable gap from the relegation zone. The current 11th place and a 10-point lead over 18th-placed Cádiz is definitely a source of joy for their fans. The white-and-blues have gained momentum in recent weeks, winning three consecutive matches against Atlético Madrid (2-0), Celta Vigo (2-0), and Valencia (1-0), before drawing 2-2 with Girona.
However, last week, they suffered a crushing defeat to the newly crowned champions, Real Madrid (5-0). After losing four of their last five away matches, Luis García's side eagerly anticipates a return to home turf, where they have lost just one of their previous seven encounters. In positive news: in 18 home duels, they have conceded only 19 goals while scoring 22.
Getafe is one of the most stable teams in La Liga this season. In previous years, the club from the Madrid suburbs often found themselves fighting for survival, but this time, the Azerubes secured their top-flight status early and currently sit 10th in the table ahead of the last two rounds. However, after a victory over struggling Almería (3-1), José Bordalás' men have slumped, losing three consecutive matches to Athletic Bilbao (2-0), Cádiz (1-0), and Atlético Madrid on Wednesday evening (0-3). Antoine Griezmann scored a first-half brace and completed his hat-trick after the break, deciding the match.
It is important to note that Getafe struggle on the road, winning just twice, drawing eight, and losing eight of their 18 La Liga away matches this season. The Madrid club will be without their top scorer Mayoral this Saturday; having scored 15 goals in 27 matches, the forward suffered a severe injury a few weeks ago and is unlikely to return soon.
In the first round, Getafe claimed a narrow victory (1-0). Surprisingly, these teams have drawn in six of their last head-to-head clashes.
Towards the end of the season, Getafe has slowed down with three consecutive defeats, while Alavés lack any meaningful motivation and are unlikely to exert themselves in the final matches of the campaign. These teams often draw against each other, making a similar outcome sensible this time around.
Alavés concedes only a goal per game at home, while Getafe generally employs cautious football and are unlikely to force the issue. I am betting on the total goals to be under 2.5.
The battle will unfold in midfield with few dangerous moments. I am betting on the total corners to be under 8.5.
Neither team has any significant motivations left in the league, so players are unlikely to risk their health in dangerous duels. I am betting on the total yellow cards to be under 4.5.
I am betting on a 0-0 scoreline.
