On Sunday 28th April, as part of the 33rd round of the Spanish Primera, Granada will play host to Osasuna. The home team sits in 19th position in the league table, finding themselves 13 points adrift of the safety zone, whereas Osasuna are in 11th place, with no particular tasks for the remaining part of the season.
Last year's Segunda champions, Granada was hoping to stay in the elite division for more than a season. Currently, they're the worst-performing of all teams that gained promotion (Las Palmas, and Alaves), sailing straight towards their second relegation within three years. They hold the 19th position in the league, being 13 points behind the 17th-ranked Celta. After an 11-match run without victories in La Liga, including a five-match losing streak, the Andalusians finally sweetened the pill by defeating Alaves 2:0, and last weekend they delivered a tie with Athletic Bilbao 1:1. Granada have the second-worst home record this season, with just 15 points gained from 16 matches on home turf, scoring 20 and conceding 26 goals.
Jesus Vallejo (on loan from Real Madrid) will miss today's match due to personal reasons, while Melendo (22 matches in La Liga) and Torrente (14 matches this season) are recovering from injuries. Midfielder Pellistri, who has been suffering from gastroenteritis, is expected to be in the starting line-up, as is Yozviak. The Albanian forward Uzuni, who has scored 10 goals this season, will also likely start, although his exit in the off-season seems probable if the team is relegated. It won't be a surprise if Manager Sandoval opts for an unchanged squad after a positive performance against Athletic last weekend. Ruiz and Gumbau will be tasked with anchoring the midfield, while Mendes and Neva will operate on the defensive flanks.
Osasuna has been one of the disappointments of the season in La Liga. Last year they reached the Copa del Rey final, finished in the top-10, and even secured the 7th spot in the national league, giving them entry into the Conference League qualification. However, this season they find themselves in the lower echelons of the league table and have suffered two consecutive losses: first to Valencia (0:1), and last weekend to Rayo Vallecano (2:1). Moises Gomez put the tri-colours in front in the first half, but the opposition came back with goals from Chavarria and Palason. Arrasate's side have notched up 11 victories, 6 draws, and 15 losses, being just one point short of the better-placed Getafe. Notably, the Pamplona-based team has gathered 18 points from 16 away games (8th best in the division), scoring 20 and conceding 24 goals. Osasuna will have to do without their top scorer and main attacking threat, Croatian forward Budimir (16 goals), who is out for several weeks and whose prospects for the end of the season are uncertain.
He's not the only one recovering from an injury: Kike Barja (cruciate ligament), Subiria (thigh bicep injury), Unai Garcia and Oros are also sidelined. Moreover, key defender Garcia received an injury in the match against Rayo last weekend, leaving his participation this weekend in question. It appears that Catena will fill in for the missing Garcia, while Raul Garcia, Ruben Garcia, and Ruben Peña will likely feature in the starting line-up again.
The last two head-to-head encounters were won by Osasuna, with identical scores (0:2 two years ago and 2:0 in the first half of the current season).
Without their effective striker Budimir, Osasuna will find it challenging to succeed in the upcoming round. Granada still possesses faint hopes for survival, but they need a miracle as they stand 13 points behind the safety threshold. Even so, Osasuna have basically no particular tournament tasks left for the rest of the season, so backing a home victory with a 0 handicap makes sense.
