On Sunday, the 21st of April, as part of the 32nd round of the Spanish Primera, Alavés will host Madrid based Atlético on their home turf. Diego Simeone's team sits in fourth place of La Liga's table, four points ahead of Athletic Bilbao trailing behind them, while Alavés holds the 14th overall position.
Alavés: Sivera; Gorosabel, Tenaglia, Marin, Duarte; Guevara, Blanco; Rebbach, Panichelli, Sola; Omorodion.
Atlético: Oblak; Witsel, Gimenez, Hermoso; Molina, Barrios, Koke, De Paul, Lino; Correa, Griezmann.
The encounter will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz at the Mendizorrotza stadium.
Alavés, one of the teams advancing in class, is on a secure trajectory to maintain their La Liga standing, having accrued 32 points and being seven points clear from the relegation zone. However, today's hosts face a challenging match against Atlético – a Madrid team aiming to secure their spot in the Champions League. Moreover, it can't be said that the Basques are in good shape: Following home defeats against Real Sociedad (0:1) and Athletic Bilbao (2:0), they suffered a third consecutive La Liga loss against relegation-bound Granada (2:0) last weekend.
It's crucial to note that in their last seven Primera appearances Alavés have scored only twice - against Rayo Vallecano and Mallorca. “El Glorioso” has shown relatively strong performances in front of their home crowd this season, amassing 21 points in 15 home matches (the 12th best indicator in the division). Sedlar, having suffered a serious injury, will be the only player missing from the blue-and-white team's lineup for this match.
Last week Atlético Madrid, having won the first Champions League quarter-final match at the Wanda Metropolitano with a score line of 2:1, travelled to Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately for fans, Diego Simeone's team couldn't hold onto their lead, losing 4:2 at Signal Iduna Park in a thrilling endgame. Returning to the national league, it can’t be said that “los Colchoneros” are having a splendid season, as they trail Real Madrid by 17 points in the title race, standing in 4th position in the La Liga table.
Last weekend, the visiting team clinched a crucial victory over Girona (3:1) – their second consecutive championship triumph following a win against Villarreal (2:1). The red-and-whites only lay claim to the seventh spot in the league table for away performances, having suffered seven losses in 15 matches.
In the first leg, Griezmann and his teammates executed their plans, scoring twice in the first half (2:1). Over their last five meetings, Alavés managed to upset Atlético’s net only once (conceding six goals).
Atlético have won five out of the last six La Liga head-to-heads and are driven by the fight for a top-three Primera finish. Granted, Alavés are fresher physically. However, “los Colchoneros” have had a full four days to recover since their encounter in Dortmund. The difference in class and motivation between the teams is stark, hence I back Simeone’s proteges' triumph.
Alavés have been in a rut of late and have only found the net once in recent five rounds. I don’t believe the blue-and-whites can breach the compact defence of "los Colchoneros" (individual total under 1).
Atlético out-class their opponent and will have control of the game. The visitors are capable of at least five corners this evening.
On average this season, both teams receive around 2 yellow cards per match, thus confident prediction is for the total number of bookings to exceed 3.5.
I wager on an exact score of 0:1 in favour of Atlético.
