On Thursday, 4th April, as part of the postponed match of the 26th round of the Spanish Primera, Granada will host Valencia on its home turf. "The Bats" are occupying the eighth place in the league table and still have chances to make it to the UEFA Cup games, while the Andalusians are in the drop zone and hardly have any chances for a save.
Granada: Batalla; Sanchez, Mendez, Rubio, Miquel, Neva; Melendo, Gumbau, Ruiz, Melendo; Arezo.
Valencia: Mamardashvili; Correia, Mosquera, Ozkacar, Foulquier; Perez, Guillamon, Pepelu, Canos; Duro, Lopez.
The match will take place in Granada at the Nuevo Los Cármenes Stadium.
Granada lags in 19th place in the La Liga table and is 14 points behind 17th-ranked Celta. Even if the hosts win this Thursday, there aren't many chances for saving - with only 8 rounds left until the end of the championship. Moreover, the red-and-whites have not tasted success in the domestic league since January 3rd - ten matches in a row, having suffered seven defeats in them. This past weekend, Granada lost for the fourth consecutive time - this time to the direct competitor for survival, Cadiz (1:0), with previous defeats of 1:0 from Mallorca, 3:2 from Real Sociedad, and a 5:1 trashing from Villarreal.
These disastrous results led to the resignation of Alexandre Medina as the team's head coach, and now the club is run by 45-year-old specialist Jose Ramon Sandoval, who has not worked since May 2022. It comes as little surprise that the hosts are in the penultimate place in the overall standings in terms of home points earned - just 12 in 14 matches, with 18 goals scored and 25 conceded.
Last year Valencia was battling for survival, but managed to undergo a reorganisation in the off-season and now can potentially finish in the UEFA Cup zone with a win this Thursday. However, this past weekend, "Los Che" failed to defeat Mallorca at home (0:0) following a loss to Villarreal on the road (1:0). What's even more alarming for fans is the fact that "Blanquinegros" won only one of the last six La Liga matches (a 1:0 victory over Getafe).
Ruben Baraja's charges do not perform particularly well on the road: only 12 points in 14 away matches (the 14th indicator in the division), with 14 goals scored and 24 conceded. To add to their woes, the team's attacking play has been off, scoring just three times in the last six matches. Considering that the visitors will face Betis, Osasuna and Barça in the following rounds, they need to ensure victory on Thursday evening.
Granada hasn't won any of the last four encounters with Valencia, and the first-leg match ended in a minimal 1:0 victory for "Los Che".
Valencia is still battling for a spot in the UEFA Cup games and has to win this Thursday evening come what may. Granada is in deep crisis and it seems to have lost faith in its own rescue: lagging 14 points behind the 17th safety spot. Moreover, the red-and-whites lost four times in a row - even a coaching rotation didn't help. My bet is for the guests to win with a 0-handicap.
Granada has conceded 9 goals in the last four rounds and is experiencing serious problems in its defensive gameplay. At the same time, Valencia has scored just three times in its last six matches, so the bet is for the total under 3 goals.
Valencia has more motivation and a slightly higher quality squad. My bet is for a "Los Che" victory in the corner kicks.
Granada averages 2.5 yellow cards per game, while the guests only get 1.8. My bet is for a red-and-white victory in the bookings.
I will place a bet for an exact score of 0:1 in favour of Valencia.
