On Saturday, 9th March, as part of the 28th round of the Spanish Primera, Valencia will host Getafe on their home field. Los Che currently sit in the ninth position in the leaderboard, having secured 37 points, whilst Getafe holds the 11th spot, trailing by two points.
Valencia: Mamardashvili; Foulquier, Mosquera, Ozkacar, Gaya; Perez, Pepelu, Guerra, Canos; Duro, Yaremchuk.
Getafe: Soria; Dakonam, Alderete, Alvarez, Rico; Maksimovic, Milla, Moriba; Rodriguez, Latasa, Mata.
The match is set to take place in Valencia on the Mestalla stadium.
The six-time Spanish champions have established themselves in the upper half of the leaderboard after several challenging years and currently occupy a decent 9th spot, only trailing the top six by five points. Last weekend, hosting Madrid's Real at the Mestalla, the hosts made the Creams' fans sweat and even managed to secure a 2:2 draw, amid disputes over refereeing decisions. The referee saved the yellow-and-orange side, blowing the final whistle just as Brahim Diaz was preparing a potential Bellingham header.
Nevertheless, Los Blanquinegros remained undefeated for the second tour in a row following a goalless draw with Sevilla (0:0). However, they won only one of their last five La Liga matches, taking the upper hand over the sinking Almeria (2:1) –then suffered defeats at the hands of Madrid's Atletico (2:0) and Las Palmas (2:0). Valencia has shown considerable prowess on their home turf, securing 25 points, scoring 17 goals and conceding just 8 in 13 home games.
From the start of the season, Getafe has shown decent results, their current 11th position in La Liga is commendable. Moreover, a victory on Saturday evening could put the Madrid side back into the upper half of the table, leapfrogging Valencia. The visitors haven't won for three tours, including two draws - with Villarreal (1:1) and Las Palmas (3:3) the previous weekend. Inbetween, Getafe suffered a heavy defeat from Barça (4:0). Eight conceded goals in three matches are a lot for a team reputed for solid defence.
This season, Jose Bordalas's men have only achieved one away win in the league, although they managed to share points in seven out of 14 matches on foreign soil, coping with Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid. For the past three seasons, the Azulones finished in the 15th place, the goal for the remainder of the season is to exceed this result. Madrid will be forced to play against Valencia without their two best attacking players – Mason Greenwood (disqualified for accruing yellow cards, 6 goals, 5 assists), and top goal scorer Mayoral (15 goals), who, according to reports, is suffering from a meniscus rupture and might not play again this season.
Last year, Valencia triumphed with a score of 5:1 at the Mestalla, but Getafe clinched victory in two subsequent matches with 1:0 scores, including a first-round match in Madrid in December.
The absence of Mayoral and Greenwood will undoubtedly affect Getafe's game quality, especially considering that the yellow-and-orange side hasn't lost to the Azulones at the Mestalla in La Liga since April 2018. The hosts have not given up hope of reaching the Eurocup zone, as any stumble will be inexcusable – Betis is already ahead by five points in sixth place. I expect no surprise here and bet on the home side's victory.
Getafe has been performing poorly on the road, conceding an average of two goals per match away. My prediction is Valencia's individual total of over 1.5 goals.
Backed by home supporters, Valencia will have the upper hand with more attacking play. I confidently bet on the hosts' victory in corners.
With an average of almost three yellow cards per match this season, Getafe is likely to resort to small foul tactics again. I predict a win for the Azulones in cautions.
I will wager on an exact 2:0 score in favour of Valencia.
