On Saturday, 10th February, as part of the 24th round of the Spanish Primera, Madrid's Real Madrid will host Girona. This season The Whites have earned 58 points and suffered only one defeat in the championship, while the Catalans are just two points behind Carlo Ancelotti's wards.
Real Madrid: Lunin; Carvajal, Rudiger, Tchouameni, Mendy; Valverde, Kroos, Camavinga; Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinicius.
Girona: Gazzaniga; Couto, E Garcia, A Martinez, Gutierrez; Torre, A Garcia, Martin; Tsyhankov, Dovbyk, Savio.
The match will take place in Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
After a hard-fought victory over Getafe (0:2), Real Madrid had the opportunity to top the La Liga table solo. This coming Saturday, we are likely looking at a title decider in Spain, especially as The Whites last weekend managed to draw 1:1 with Atletico at Bernabeu. Ancelotti's team took the lead thanks to a goal by Brahim Diaz, but in injury time in the second half, "rojiblancos" restored parity on the scoreboard with efforts from Llorente. In this campaign, Real Madrid has only lost twice: in La Liga to Atletico (3:1) and in the Copa del Rey 1/8 final, again at Wanda and again to the "mattress makers" (4:2 after extra time).
In general, the home team has already won the Spanish Super Cup in January and is aiming for success in the Champions League: next week they will travel to Leipzig for the first match of the 1/8 final. The "royal club" has been hit with a series of staffing setbacks. In addition to the absence of Courtois (returning in late March-early April), Militao and Alaba, Madrid will now have to do without Nacho (training outside the main group).
Girona is a real contender for the title this season, although no one expected such a performance from the Catalan team. The Whites and Bordeaux occupy 2nd place in La Liga, and a victory at Santiago Bernabeu could take the underdog to the top of La Liga. Like Madrid, the Blanquivermell was unable to take all three points last weekend, drawing 0:0 at home with Real Sociedad.
Ultimately, like the capital grand, the Catalans have only lost twice this season in all competitions. Even if the Catalans cannot claim the champion title, they have every chance to compete for a place in the Champions League, which would be a historic achievement for the club, which is only its fourth season in the elite division. Meanwhile, the guests have the second best away form: 27 points collected from 11 matches, 22 goals scored and only 11 conceded.
In the first leg of the championship, Real Madrid trounced Girona away 0:3. This victory marked the first one for the 'royal club' in the last four direct confrontations.
Real Madrid had the opportunity to pull away from its pursuers in the last round against Atletico, but The Whites missed their chance – now another one presents itself. If Madrid win this Saturday, the destiny of the title in Spain will, in all likelihood, be decided. Considering the personnel losses among Dovbik's guests and the excellent current form of the hosts, there's a high likelihood of a home win with a handicap of -1.
Both teams are the most productive in the current La Liga campaign, with Girona scoring 4 goals more (52 against 48). We confidently bet on both will score and total goals over 2.5.
Real Madrid will keep the ball and begin methodically cracking the opponent's defence from the flanks, while Girona will play as second fiddle. I expect a home team victory in corners with a handicap of -1.5.
In a match that could potentially determine the fate of the championship title, tensions are bound to flare on the pitch. I expect the referee to show at least 5 yellow cards.
I'm betting on an exact score of 3:2 in favour of Real Madrid.
