Today as a part of the 23rd tour of the Spanish Primera, Villarreal will play host to Cadiz. "The Yellow Submarine" is preparing for the match in high spirits after a 3:5 victory over Barcelona while Cadiz managed a goalless draw against "Athletic Bilbao" a week ago.
Last weekend, "The Yellow Submarine" delighted their fans with a radiant victory over "Barcelona" in Catalonia (3:5). Gerard Moreno scored the first goal of the first half, Ahomach doubled the underdog's lead 9 minutes after the break, but then "Blaugrana" scored three times. It seemed like everything was going to triumph for the scarlet navy, however, goals from Guedes, Sorlot and Morales in injury time turned the course of the match upside down. This victory for "the submarines" ended a streak of three matches in the championship without a win, including two heavy defeats - from "Valencia" (3:1) and "Las Palmas" (3:0). In the league table, the home team occupies an unusual 14th place for themselves and are 13 points behind the European zone. However, Marcelino's wards qualified for the playoffs of the Europa League, so until March they can focus on the domestic arena.
"Villarreal" still has a full hospital: Denis Suarez, midfielder Pino (due back in service in March), defenders Pedrasa and Foyt, experienced Parejo (due back in mid-February) and summer signing Ramona Terraza (meniscus tear) - all are injured. Goalkeeper Pepe Reina will serve his second suspension after being sent off two weeks ago, and veteran centre-back Albiol is likely to miss the match due to a minor injury. Gerard Moreno (10 goals, 2 assists in La Liga), along with Norweigan Sorlot (8 goals, 4 assists) and Ahomach are likely to make up the attacking trio after a standout performance in Catalonia. Hugo Ramos (RB Leipzig, on loan) recently joined the club, as did Yerson Mosquera and Gonzalo Guedes (both from Wolverhampton).
"Cadiz" has dropped to 18th place overall and has not won a match in the last 18 rounds of La Liga since the beginning of September (that was coincidentally the meeting with Villarreal). The current season for the "Pirate Ship" has turned into a real torture, and a demotion would not be a surprise for the fans, considering their favorite's poor form. However, last weekend the Andalusians showed character, withstanding the onslaught of "Athletic" from Bilbao (0:0) despite losing three matches in a row - to "Alaves" (1:0), "Valencia" (1:4) and "Granada" (2:0). Much of the gained point is due to personnel changes: the head coach's position is now occupied by Mauricio Pellegrino, so the visitor's 1 point deficit against 17th placed "Celta" is more than recoverable.
It should be noted that "Cadiz" scores the fewest goals in the current La Liga season (only 15 goals with 31 conceded). The "Pirates" will have to make do without Javi Hernandez (18 appearances this season) and Luis Hernandez, as both are injured. The same goes for forward Darwin Machis (3 goals in 15 matches); Roger Marti (2 goals, 2 assists) is out due to a broken fibula, as is Fede San-Emeterio (ACL tear). The troubles for "Cadiz" do not end there: Fali and Ruben Alcaras will be suspended for accumulating too many yellow cards. Alvaro Gimenez moved to "Tenerife" on loan until the end of the season in the last transfer window, and forward Alvaro Negredo terminated his contract with the club.
Cadiz has not won in the Spanish championship since early September when they ironically scored a home victory over Villarreal with a score of 3:1.
After beating "Barca" in a dramatic shootout a week ago, "Villarreal" has all the chances to climb out of their psychological rut and start collecting points at their old pace again. "Cadiz" has only won two games this season and hasn't claimed victory in the last 18 rounds - the underdog's overflowing hospital is hardly conducive to a potential sensation. I expect a comfortable victory for "The Yellow Submarine".
