On Thursday, 1 February GMT, in the framework of the postponed matchday 20 of the Spanish La Liga, Getafe will take on Real Madrid at their home ground. Whilst Los Blancos hold the second place and are trailing by one point behind Girona, Azulones have entrenched themselves in 10th position with 29 amassed points.
Getafe: Soria; Suarez; Djene, Alderete, Rico; Greenwood, Maksimovic, Milla, Alena; Mayoral, Mata.
Real Madrid: Lunin; Carvajal, Rudiger, Nacho, Mendy; Valverde, Tchouameni, Modric, Bellingham; Vinicius, Rodrygo.
The clash will take place in Getafe at the Coliseum Stadium.
Last Monday, Getafe hosted Granada as part of matchday 22 in La Liga and claimed victory with a 2:0 scoreline, thanks to two first-half goals from Greenwood and Mayoral. The victory was paramount for keeping their prospects of making it into the top 10 - the team currently holds the 10th spot in the overall tally.
Having won seven times and suffered six losses from 21 La Liga matches, Jose Bordalas' charges have earned a reputation as an extremely stubborn team at home: in 10 home meetings, they've achieved six victories, played out three draws and suffered only one defeat. It's impressive that Getafe have conceded a mere six goals at the Coliseum this season, which undoubtedly ensures a hard time for the Madrid prospect this Thursday!
The current Supercopa de Espana holder is already sure to be stripped of the Copa del Rey title following its elimination by Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, the 35-time champions of Spain have suffered only one defeat in La Liga and, more importantly, two in all competitions. Notably, these two losses were inflicted by only one opponent - Atletico.
If Los Blancos win on Thursday night, they will regain the lead in the overall standings, overtaking Girona. Last weekend, the visitors garnered all 3 points away at Las Palmas, with the winning goal in the match (1:2) scored by Aurelien Chouameni. Carlo Ancelotti's players have been more than worthy on the road, amassing 26 points in 11 matches in the current La Liga campaign (the second-best record after Girona).
The visitors have dropped points in three of their last five away meetings with Getafe, yet managed a hard-fought victory in the first round of this season, with a scoreline of 2:1.
The upcoming match result will dictate the fate of the top spot in La Liga, as Real are just 1 point behind the Catalans on the leaderboard. Undoubtedly, Getafe pose a robust defensive wall on their home turf, but the chances of Azulones breaking the resistance of a considerably more prestigious opponent are close to zero. I believe a motivated Royal club will bag all three points this Thursday.
In none of the seven previous head-to-heads did the teams score more than three goals. Getafe will bunker down again this time, so we confidently bet on a total goal under 3.
Real will hold the advantage and attack a lot, hence the visitors will take the lead on corners with a handicap of -1.5.
Getafe is one of the roughest teams in La Liga (more than 3 yellow cards per game on average). I expect Azulones to claim victory on this parameter this time around as well.
I'll bet on an exact score of 0:1 in favour of Real.
