On Saturday, 27 January, as part of the 22nd round of the Spanish Primera, Las Palmas will host Real Madrid on their field. Last weekend, Los Blancos barely edged past Almería with a score of 3:2, while the Islanders will come into the match following a victory over Rayo Vallecano (2:0).
Las Palmas: Valles; Suarez, Herzog, Marmol, S. Cardona; El-Haddadi, Munoz, Perron, K. Rodriguez, Moleiro; Sandro.
Real Madrid: Lunin; Carvajal, Rudiger, Nacho, Mendy; Valverde, Tchouameni, Kroos; Diaz; Vinicius, Rodrigo.
The match will take place in Las Palmas at the Gran Canaria Stadium.
Las Palmas only achieved promotion last year, however, it's fair to say that the team from the Canary Islands has been more than impressive halfway through the season. Their current 8th place in the La Liga table allows the hosts to even dream about qualifying for the European zone, especially after the yellow-blues won against Rayo Vallecano (0:2) a week ago. Prior to this, there was a crushing victory at home against Villarreal, and now the "parrots" lag only four points behind the top six clubs. Las Palmas, coached by Garcia Pimienta, have scored five times in their last two matches yet they are one of the least scoring teams in La Liga this season (21 goals). The Islanders' successful results are largely based on solid defence, as only Real Madrid (13) have conceded fewer goals (17).
Defender Araujo, on loan from Barcelona, was disciplined by the coaching staff and will definitely not play on Saturday, as will injured players Lemos (rotation), Curbelo (has only played one match this season in La Liga) and Sinkgraven (moved from Bayer last summer). Coco (Equatorial Guinea) and Mfulu (DRC) are unavailable due to their participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. Javier Munoz (2 assists this season) scored his first league goal against Rayo and is likely to start on Saturday. Sandro, Alberto Moleiro (2 goals, 3 assists in La Liga) and Munir El-Haddadi will be responsible for creativity in attack, while Mark Cardona will boost the game by coming off the bench in the second half.
Thanks to several favourable refereeing decisions, Real made a comeback at Santiago Bernabeu last weekend, making up a two-goal deficit against Almería. After the break, Ancelotti made some adjustments to his team's setup, and in the second half Los Blancos looked like a completely different team. First, Bellingham converted a penalty, then Vinicius scored a contentious shoulder-goal, and Dani Carvajal drove in the winning goal in added time (3:2). It's important to remember that the capital club was recently eliminated from the Copa del Rey, losing 4:2 to Atletico in the 1/8 finals at Wanda Metropolitano. Moreover, Real's only two defeats this season in all competitions came at the hands of Diego Simeone. In the league table, the "royal club", having played one extra match, occupies 2nd place and is trailing the leading Girona by a single point.
Madrid's defenders Alaba, Courtois and Militao are out of action for a long time. The latter recently extended his contract with the club and resumed individual training, but his return to action is not expected for several months. However, Lucas Vazquez has recovered from injury. A serious blow for Los Blancos this weekend will be the suspension of English superstar Jude Bellingham (yellow card accumulation): the midfielder has scored 14 goals in La Liga and is the team's main offensive force. But Guler, Rodrigo, Vinicius, Modric, Kroos, Tchouameni and Camavinga are all available to start – a constellation of superstars that any club in the world would envy.
Real will try to secure their fourth consecutive win over Las Palmas, including a 2:0 success at Santiago Bernabeu in September 2023.
In case of victory, Real could temporarily climb to the top spot in the league table, therefore the visitors are not short of motivation. Las Palmas' performance in this campaign has been commendable – however, they don't stand a chance in a fair fight with a football titan like Real Madrid. Considering that the Madrid team has gained 23 points in 10 away Primera matches (second best in the league), we confidently bet on the favourite's win this Saturday.
