One of the most anticipated group stage matches of the RPL Path is scheduled to take place on 29th August. The ultimate rivalry of Moscow's oldest derby will be settled on the pitch by the players of Moscow's "Dynamo" and "Spartak".
Spartak Moscow had an excellent start to the 2023-2024 season and was considered one of the main contenders for the championship over a series of rounds. The Red-and-Whites confidently outplayed their opponents and were on top of the Mir-RPL and the Russian Cup standings. However, an away match with "Ural" has seriously undermined the Moscow team.
The Red-and-Whites lost to "Ural", succumbed in a crucial match against Zenit, and failed to outplay Akhmat on their home turf. The most titled club of the Russian championship fell to 7th place in the standings, already trailing 4 points behind Krasnodar, which leads alone. In the RPL Path of the Russian Cup, Spartak has not yet suffered defeat. They had a phenomenal match in Krasnodar, where they dominated over the leader of the Mir-RPL throughout the match, and proved their superior class at home against Pari NN.
Moscow's Dynamo had a suboptimal last season, ending up at a disappointingly low 9th place for a team with such a rich history. During the offseason, Dynamo has improved its coaching position. Marcel Lichka, formerly of "Orenburg", is now at the helm of the White-and-Blues. Under the Czech specialist, Dynamo couldn't secure a victory in the first three matches, losing to "Krasnodar", Pari NN, and managing just 1 point in a match against "Krylia Sovetov".
The first victory occurred against Saint Petersburg's "Zenit". For the first time in a long while, the Moscow team outplayed "Zenit" in Saint Petersburg, starting their ascent up the league table. Marcel Lichka's charges overcame Krasnodar in the Russian Cup, outclassed Baltika and CSKA in the Mir-RPL. In their latest match on 26th August, Dynamo drew against Rubin.
In the last 5 meetings between Spartak and Dynamo", the red-and-whites have had the upper hand. Spartak triumphed in two encounters, as many ended in a draw, and Dynamo gathered full points just once in their last 5 matches against Spartak.
Spartak will secure a victory. Despite their decline in recent matches, the important bout with a major rival should provide a boost on an emotional level. Due to the status of the match, Abascal is likely to field a full-strength squad, featuring Spartak's strongest foreign players who have an individual edge over their Dynamo counterparts.
