In the first round of the US Open on hard courts, Adrian Mannarino of France will play against Yosuke Watanuki of Japan. We're trading on a Mannarino victory with a game handicap -3,5.
35-year-old Adrian, who ranks 23rd in the world's tennis players, previously participated in the Cincinnati tournament and made it to the quarterfinals. In his first match, he got past Gasquet with a score of 6:4, 6:3, then defeated Auger-Aliassime 6:4, 6:4 and McDonald who had to withdraw from the match at 6:4, 3:0. The tennis player then lost to Zverev with a score of 2:6, 3:6. It's worth noting that Mannarino failed to pass the first round in the previous tournaments in Toronto and Washington, losing to Daniel 6:7 (5:7), 4:6 and Thompson 5:7, 4:6.
Earlier at the Newport tournament, Adrian conquered the title defeating Hijikata 6:3, 6:4, Thompson 6:0, 6:7 (4:7), 6:2, Humbert 6:4, 6:3 and Mikkelsen 6:2, 6:4. At Wimbledon, he also defeated Shevchenko with a score of 6:3, 6:3, 6:2, but lost to Medvedev with a score of 3:6, 3:6, 6:7 (5:7) in the next match.
In July, in Mallorca, Mannarino managed to get to the final, defeating Peliwoo 3:6, 7:6 (7:5), 6:3, Moutet 7:5, 6:2 and Hanfmann 7:6 (7:4), 6:4, but eventually lost to Eubanks with a score of 1:6, 4:6. At the London tournament, he reached the quarterfinals, overcoming Broady and Fritz, but then lost to De Minaur. In Hertogenbosch, he also showed high gameplay form, reaching the quarterfinals and defeating Fils 7:6 (7:1), 6:4 and Medvedev 4:6, 6:4, 6:2, but losing to Thompson 7:5, 6:7 (2:7), 2:6 in the third match.
Before this, Mannarino encountered difficulties, having lost in 9 out of 11 matches. He lost to Umbert in the French Open, and at the Geneva tournament, he couldn't get over the second round, overcoming Krajinovic but losing to Ivashka. In May, at the Bordeaux clay Challenger, the tennis player lost in the first round to Ramos, and in Rome, he was defeated by Monteiro. At the Challenger in Aix-en-Provence, Adrian failed to pass the first round, losing to Van de Zandschulp, and at the Madrid tournament, he suffered a loss to Etcheverry.
Yosuke Watanuki, a 25-year-old athlete from Japan, who ranks 88th in the world tennis player rankings, previously participated in the Stanford Challenger and reached the semi-finals. During the tournament, the tennis player gained victories over Johnson with a score of 7:5, 5:7, 6:4, Moreno de Alboran 7:5, 6:3, and Duckworth 6:1, 6:3, but then retired from the match against Lestienne.
Earlier in Washington, Yosuke showed good game and achieved two confident victories. In his first match, he met with Wu Yibing, who refused to continue the match at 4:1 in Wu's favor in the first set. In the next round, Watanuki met the challenge in the face of Auger-Aliassime and dealt with it successfully, achieving victory with a score of 7:6 (12:10), 7:6 (7:3), but then lost to Humbert with a score of 0:6, 2:6.
Earlier this season, Watanuki also participated in Wimbledon. He passed the qualifying round for the tournament and defeated Hon with a score of 7:6 (7:4), 7:6 (9:7) and Celikbilek 7:6 (7:4), 6:3, but lost to Novak with a score of 7:6 (9:7), 3:6, 3:6, 4:6. Later in the main draw of the tournament, Yosuke overcame Huesler but suffered a defeat from Zverev.
At the beginning of the season, Watanuki advanced to the semi-finals at the Canberra Challenger. On his way, he defeated Van de Zandschulp, Rodionov and Gombos, but suffered a loss from Fucsovics. Also in February, he showed good play at the Monterrey tournament and reached the semi-finals. However, on other competitions this season, he couldn't get beyond the second round.
The athletes have not previously played against each other.
Mannarino showed a good match in Cincinnati, and overall he surpasses his opponent in class of play. Watanuki, in turn, withdrew from the last match against Lestienne, and his form is now in question. I think Mannarino will emerge victorious, and that's where my bet goes.
