Russian Andrey Rublev will face Argentine Francisco Comesana in the 1st round of Wimbledon on Tuesday, 2nd July.
The 26-year-old Russian tennis player is ranked 6th in the world. Rublev commenced the season by clinching a long-awaited title in Hong Kong. In the final, he comfortably defeated Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4, 6-4. Riding high after securing the trophy, he advanced to the Australian Open quarter-finals. However, Jannik Sinner halted his progress – 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 3-6. Furthermore, this year he reached the quarter-finals in Rotterdam and Qatar.
Rublev also reached the semi-finals in Dubai, although it was marred by an unpleasant disqualification for abusing a line judge. The match had to be suspended in the 3rd set, with the score tied at 1-1. This incident seemingly affected Rublev’s psychological state, and for several months his performance was underwhelming.
However, in May, Rublev showed he's still a force to be reckoned with by winning the title in Madrid. The tournament was a grueling challenge for the Russian, as he competed with a high fever due to tonsillitis.
Last year at Wimbledon, Rublev reached the quarter-finals where he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets – 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 3-6.
This season, he has played only one match on grass courts in Halle, where he was defeated by the world No. 46 Marcos Giron – 4-6, 6-7 (5-7). Although last year, the Russian reached the final in Germany.
The 23-year-old Argentine is ranked 123rd in the world. This season, Comesana claimed one title, albeit at a Challenger event. At the clay tournament in Oeiras 3, Francisco progressed through Hugo Blanchet, Jaime Faria, Samuel Vincent Ruggeri, Elias Ymer, and Santiago Taverna. He also reached the semi-finals in Mauthausen. However, he hasn’t had much success at the ATP level.
This year, the Argentine has only played one match on grass. It happened during the qualifiers for the Eastbourne tournament, where he lost to Charles Broom – 4-6, 6-3, 5-7.
Comesana will make his Wimbledon debut and has made it directly into the main draw.
The players have not faced each other before.
This season, Comesana hasn’t won a match in the main draw of the ATP Tour. Playing against an experienced player like Andrey Rublev will be extremely challenging for him. The Russian undeniably outmatches him in many aspects. Without sufficient experience on grass and against top players, Francisco is almost certain to suffer a defeat.
Despite Rublev having a shaky start on grass courts this year, the world No. 6 is the clear favourite. He will prevail due to his class, skill, and technique. For him, the Argentine is a walkover opponent. Furthermore, Andrey has decided not to compete in the Paris Olympics due to the heavy load, meaning his focus is solely on Wimbledon.
