Today, as part of the start of Wimbledon qualification, we have an Argentine derby between Marco Trungelliti and Facundo Bagnis.
This season, the Argentine is performing to his usual standard, currently holding the 153rd spot in the ATP rankings. He primarily competes in Challenger series tournaments. This season, Marco has reached the final twice in Rwanda, winning one of them against France's Tabur 2:0 (6:4 6:2). Noteworthy is his successful run in the ATP series tournament in Barcelona, where Trungelliti reached the Round of 16. On his way, he defeated Italy's Mager, Spain's Liam-Ruiz, Croatia's Andjuikovich, and the world's 19th ranked player from Chile, Jarry. Trungelliti has yet to play on grass this season, but it’s worth mentioning his performance at Wimbledon 2021. There, he navigated through all the qualification rounds, defeating players like Seyboth Wild, Mayer, and Van de Zandschulp. Hence, Marco has a successful grass court experience to his name.
Facundo Bagnis is a typical representative of the Argentine clay court circuit. He is currently ranked 124th in the ATP. Like his upcoming opponent, Facundo predominantly participates in Challenger series tournaments. This season, he only participated in the Roland Garros, where he lost in the final qualifying round to Japan's Mochizuki 0:1 (4:6 0:2 Retired). Bagnis has not played on grass this season. It’s fair to say that grass is the most challenging surface for him. Throughout his career, the Argentine has not won a single match on grass.
Over their long careers, today’s opponents have faced each other 7 times. Trungelliti has won 4 of those encounters. However, the most recent match, which took place at the 2021 US Open, was won by Bagnis 3:1.
Both players have had fairly consistent performances this season without significant declines. However, considering Bagnis’s poor preparation for grass court tournaments, it would be prudent to back Marco Trungelliti. Trungelliti’s successful experience on grass may give him the edge in this clash.
