Today, at the first grass tournament in Stuttgart, Serbian Hamad Medjedovic will play against Hungarian Fabian Marozsan.
Ranked 131st in the world, Hamad Medjedovic has not played many matches in 2024 due to a hand injury. However, he managed to reach the second round of the clay Masters in Rome and successfully qualify for Roland Garros by defeating three opponents, including Krajinovic and Pouille. Last year, Medjedovic successfully qualified for Wimbledon and even took a set off O'Connell. He reached the main draw of the Ilkley Challenger, demonstrating noticeable progress and defeating less known players.
Recently, Medjedovic has significantly improved his game, winning 7 out of his last 9 matches, which has helped him gain good form ahead of the grass season. The Serbian can achieve excellent results at the upcoming tournament in Stuttgart, despite his relatively low ranking and poor results in the previous season.
This is his first participation in the current tournament in Stuttgart, and Medjedovic has every chance to confirm his reputation as a capable grass player, relying on his experience and recent successes on clay.
In 2024, Fabian Marozsan, ranked 42nd in the world, has shown mixed results with an overall match balance of 14:14, with a 3-5 record on clay. Despite the low level of play on clay this season, the Hungarian has performed well on hard courts, reaching the fourth round of the Masters in Indian Wells and the quarterfinals in Miami, defeating De Minaur and the solid Cerundolo.
Marozsan already has experience playing on grass, although his results have remained modest. Last year, he failed to qualify for Wimbledon, stopping in the final round of qualifiers. Despite entering the tournament as a lucky loser, he was quickly knocked out by veteran David Goffin. These results show that while Marozsan can compete at a high level, his play on grass still leaves much to be desired.
At the tournament in Stuttgart, which will be Marozsan's debut, the Hungarian will face the equally inexperienced Serbian Medjedovic. Since the beginning of his career, he has played only 4 matches on grass (2-2), and his upcoming performance in Stuttgart will be a test of his ability to adapt to the fast and slippery surface. This tournament will give Marozsan a chance to improve his performance and possibly climb the rankings if he can overcome the problems of past performances and reach a new level of play on grass.
In 2 head-to-head matches, the score is 1-1. Marozsan won in 2021 at the clay M15 tournament in Antalya with a score of 2:6, 6:1, 7:6. In the same year, at an ITF tournament, the Serbian took revenge with a score of 6:4, 6:4.
In a match between non-grass specialists, I predict a total of over 22.5 games. The opponents are approximately equal in level and have not yet played against each other in major tournaments at the senior level. Grass is far from their preferred surface, so I expect 3 sets.
