Today another quarter-final match of the Russian Cup Path RPL will kick-off. Fans of Russian football are set to witness a clash of teams that battled for medals last season but are now positioned outside the top-3 and are just planning to enter the fight for the pedestal of honour. 'Rostov' will host Moscow's CSKA at their home ground.
For the 2023-2024 season, 'Rostov' is not performing well and seems to be merely a pale shadow of the team that performed brilliantly last spring, struggling until the last round to break into the top-3 and finally securing the 4th place in the Mir-RPL tournament table. The players, guided by Valery Karpin, displayed an excellent start to the season and for a while, positioned themselves among the strongest teams of Mir-RPL. However, Rostov stumbled towards the end of August and throughout September. It all started with away defeats from Sochi and Pari NN with a total score of 5:0. Following this, the yellow-blues lost to Dinamo, were defeated by 'Krasnodar', and scraped only 1 point each in games against Baltika, CSKA, and Ural. Currently, Rostov has started to bounce back from this crisis, slowly climbing up the tournament table and approaching the top-8. 'Rostov' suffered their last defeat in their encounter with Spartak, losing 0:2, while their face-off with 'Pari NN' ended in success. In the group stage of the Russian Cup Path RPL, 'Rostov' competed in group 'B' and settled for the 2nd position in the quartet with Lokomotiv, Ural, and Kazan's Rubin.
The silver medallist of the 2023-2024 Mir-RPL season is not performing as steadily and confidently in the current regular season. The Reds had a great spring stint in the championship, knocking Moscow's 'Spartak' off the 2nd position, who got bogged down but managed to defeat CSKA in the derby. At this point, CSKA ranks 6th in the Mir-RPL tournament table, which is significantly below the abilities and potential of the current red-blue players. The reason for this is the level of competition in the tournament table. The 'Army Men' only need 1 victory to reach the 3rd position, and the championship leader from St. Petersburg has only gathered 8 points more. In their latest matches, CSKA has been less stable than desired, managing to gather only 1 point against Fakel and losing to Moscow's 'Dynamo'. Before this, CSKA managed to beat 'Krasnodar' and 'Pari Nizhny Novgorod' in extremely close matches. Vladimir Fedotov's charges gathered one point each in the games against 'Spartak' and 'Rubin'. In the group stage of the Path RPL Russian Cup, the red-blues were successful, emerging as the winners of Group 'A', surpassing 'Orenburg' for the 1st position based on additional indicators.
CSKA and Rostov have faced each other in 69 official matches. CSKA has claimed 37 victories, while 'Rostov' has won 18 face-offs. The teams have failed to decide a winner 14 times.
The teams will not manage to determine a victor. 'Rostov' is a formidable player at home, this year Valery Karpin's devotees haven't allowed 'Zenit', 'Lokomotiv', and even CSKA to celebrate victory on their turf, as the latter left Rostov-on-Don with just 1 point. An action-packed match should not be expected, with the main events of the confrontation set to take place in Moscow in 2 months' time.
