On Saturday, 9 March, within the confines of the 28th round of the Italian Serie A, Genoa will play host to Monza. A victory at Luigi Ferraris will allow the latter to level the score with the guests, who last weekend suffered a 1:4 defeat from Roma.
Genoa: Martinez; De Winter, Bani, Vogliacco; Sabelli, Frendrup, Badelj, Messias, Martin; Gudmundsson, Retegui.
Monza: Di Gregorio; Birindelli, Mari, Izzo, A. Carboni; Pessina, Gagliardini; V. Carboni, Colpani, Mota; Djuric.
Genoa's return to the elite division has been more than successful, allowing the hosts to remain clear of the relegation zone. Currently, the Genoese club sits in the 12th spot in Serie A, a good 10 points away from 18th placed Cagliari. In the last 12 rounds, the team only faced two defeats, alongside four victories and six draws. After besting Udinese (2:0), Genoa faced a noble defeat 2:1 from table-leading Internazionale last Monday.
Nonetheless, Alberto Gilardino's team has attained 33 points, their best tally at this stage of the season since 2014, and still aim to break into the top 10 by May. It's noteworthy that Genoa's home performances have been less than stellar: in 13 home matches, the team has amassed 20 points, scoring 17 goals and conceding 16.
Situated comfortably in the lower half of the table, Monza ranks 11th in Serie A. They stand clear of relegation, but chances for a spot in the European tournaments are rather slim. Last weekend, Monza suffered a crushing home defeat from Roma, with a scoreline 1:4, ending their 5-match unbeaten run in the championship (3 victories and 2 draws).
Andrea Carboni's late goal only served as a minor consolation for coach Raffaele Palladino's side. Monza showcased excellent defensive discipline during its last two away matches against Udinese and Salernitana and accrued as many points in the last six rounds as the reigning champions Napoli and third-place Milan. It's worth noting that Monza tends to perform well away from home, accruing 16 points, scoring 11 goals while conceding 17 in 13 away bouts.
Genoa hasn't lost a single out of the previous 26 home matches against Monza, winning 20 and drawing six. The first-round encounter ended in the latter's 1:0 victory.
Both teams have effectively ruled out relegation and unlikely to break into European qualification spots — the gap from the top six is too great. Genoa has a knack for stalemates (digesting seven draws in eight recent home fixtures), while a similar result wouldn't upset Monza either (who spared peace in two of the last five rounds). I would venture a bet on a draw once again.
Among the lower half-table teams in Serie A, Genoa (33) and Monza (34) have conceded the least goals this season, thus prompting a confident bet on the total goals under 3.
Playing at home, Genoa will look to entertain their fans with attacking play. I'd stake a bet on Genoa's individual total of over 4.5 corners.
Both teams earn an average of 2.3 yellow cards per match, therefore, a total of over 3.5 cards feels like a safe bet.
I'd wager a bet on a goalless draw, predicting the final score as 0:0.
