On Saturday, 10th February, as part of the 24th round of the Italian Serie A, Roma will welcome Inter on their home turf. The hosts are hoping to continue ascending the league table under the management of Daniele De Rossi, whilst the Nerazzurri are charging full steam towards the coveted championship title.
Roma: Patricio; Karsdorp, Mancini, Llorente, Angelino; Pellegrini, Paredes, Cristante; El Shaarawy, Dybala; Lukaku.
Inter: Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez.
At present, Roma are sitting in 5th place in Serie A and, with one game in hand, are trailing Atalanta in 4th place by just 1 point. Inconsistent performances in the first half of the season led the Rome giants' management to part ways with José Mourinho in mid-January. Daniele De Rossi was appointed as his successor. Under the leadership of their legend, the Giallorossi have been perfect thus far: they have successively defeated Verona (2:1), Salernitana (1:2) and Cagliari last Monday (4:0), which has returned them to the race for the top four: Paulo Dybala scored a brace and skipper Lorenzo Pellegrini continued his goal-scoring run.
Another victory on Saturday would make the Italian specialist the first Serie A coach in over a decade to take over a team mid-season and immediately win four matches in a row. Incidentally, Roma will host Feyenoord in the Europa League play-off this coming Thursday.
This season, Inter are favourites to win the Scudetto and are currently in top spot in Serie A, with one game in hand and a 4-point lead over the trailing Juventus. The Nerazzurri have been brimming with self-confidence ever since their sole league defeat at the end of September last year. Prior to New Year's, Inter drew with Genoa with a score of 1:1 but there have been no slip-ups since then: the visitors have won their last 4 clashes, including a crucial win over Bianconeri by 1:0 last weekend - an own goal by Gatti being the decider.
Consequently, Inter became the second club in history to find the back of the net in 22 consecutive Serie A rounds since the start of the season! Simone Inzaghi’s charges, who recently won the Italian Super Cup, have also made it to the Champions League round of 16, where they will face Atletico Madrid. Inter continues to be without experienced right back Cuadrado, who is expected to be out for the next 2 months.
Having suffered a 1:0 defeat in the October match, Roma have been beaten in five out of their last six head-to-head encounters with Inter in Serie A.
Both teams are in great form, however, surprisingly, the Romans are in a much greater need of points than Inter. The hosts are battling for a top four position and are trailing Atalanta by a single point, and their injury roster is gradually thinning. Considering that the Milanese team will soon face Atletico in the Champions League, I'll take the risk and back the double outcome for the hosts.
Roma (15) and Inter (14) have scored the most goals in the final 15 minutes of Serie A games this season, suggesting that betting on a total of over 1 goals in the second half is viable.
Both teams boast fast flank players and won't be parking the bus. I'm backing the total corners over 9.5.
In the first leg, both teams amassed a whopping seven yellow cards – it's clear that the intensity won't drop in this round. I'm wagering on the total yellow cards over 4.5.
I'm betting on a precise score of 2:1 in favour of Roma.
