On Sunday, the 4th of February, as part of the 23rd round of the Premier League, Arsenal will take on Liverpool on home turf. At midweek, both teams secured crucial victories: the Gunners overcame Nottingham Forest 2-1 in a hard-fought battle, while Jurgen Klopp's team thrashed Chelsea 4-1.
Arsenal: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Rice, Havertz; Saka, Jesus, Martinelli.
Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Jones, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Jota, Gakpo, Diaz.
Last season, Arsenal came close to winning the title, so their goal for the current campaign is clear. Currently, the London team occupies the 3rd place in the Premier League standings, trailing the leading Liverpool by 5 points. The Gunners are also looking back as they are only 3 points clear of Aston Villa seating in the fifth position, making even a Champions League berth still unguaranteed. After a string of disappointing results in December, the red and whites have picked up again, prevailing over Crystal Palace (5:0) and Nottingham Forest this week (1:2).
After a goalless first half, Nottingham's goalkeeper Matt Turner conceded a shot between his legs from Gabriel Jesus, while Gonzalo Montiel failed to stop Bukayo Saka's counterattack. Nottingham only managed a goal from Awoniyi at the very end. It's important to note that in their last seven matches at the Emirates, the hosts claimed victory six times.
Having failed to meet expectations last season, Liverpool have reentered the title fight this campaign. Currently, the Reds lead the Premier League standings, with a game in hand and a 5-point margin over Manchester City. The Reds are brimming with confidence, having suffered their only defeat of the season in late September. In the last four rounds, Klopp’s wards defeated Burnley (0:2), Newcastle (2:4), Bournemouth (0:4), and Chelsea this week (4:1).
Conor Bradley scored his first goal for Liverpool and assisted Dominik Szoboszlai and Diogo Jota, becoming the youngest player in the club in the last five years to achieve this, with Luis Diaz killing the plot towards the end. In fact, the guests have the best away records in the Premier League this season, securing 22 points in 11 matches.
Klopp’s wards knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup 1/32 finals (0:2), just a few weeks ago, although in the first leg of the league, the teams drew at Anfield (1:1).
It is difficult to predict the favourite in a match between two equally powerful giants. Arsenal, indeed, will be playing with the support of their home crowd, but the current form of Liverpool cannot fail to impress: they haven't lost a league game since the end of September. Two out of the previous three head-to-head matches ended in a draw – I’m willing to take a risk and predict the same outcome now.
It's evident, the game will be rich in goals and thrilling moments. Both teams have top-class forwards, therefore, the safe bet is on 'both teams to score' a total of over 2.5 goals.
Both sides will try to play offensively and will not stick to their own halves. Expecting at least 11 corners from the teams.
The outcome of this match will largely determine the future of the championship title. In the first leg, the teams collected seven warnings between them, therefore, the safe bet would be a total of over 4.5 yellow cards.
My prediction for the exact score is 2:2.
