On Thursday the 7th of March the first match of the Europa League 1/8 final, "Milan" will host "Slavia." Stefano Pioli's team easily dealt with "Rennes" in the previous round, while Prague took the top spot in their quartet and bypassed the 1/16 final.
"Milan": Maignan; Florenzi, Thiaw, Gabbia, Hernandez; Reijnders, Bennacer; Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Leao; Giroud.
"Slavia": Stanek; Doudera, Holes, Zima, Vlcek, Boril; Jurecka, Masopust, Dorley, Schranz; Chytil.
The battle gears up in Milan at the San Siro Stadium.
Having secured third place in the group of death in the Champions League, where the "Rossoneri" faced "PSG", "Borussia Dortmund" and "Newcastle", the hosts defeated "Rennes" in the 1/16 final of the Europa League, despite a fiasco in the return match in Brittany (5:3 on aggregate). Thus, "Milan" has reached the 1/8 final of the second-tier continental championship for the third time in its history. On the domestic front, Stefano Pioli's squad is in third place and is 13 points behind arch-rivals - Milanese "Inter" - hence the Scudetto hopes faded by winter initiation.
Even more worryingly, the "Rossoneri" suffered a sensational 4:2 defeat in Monza in late February and drew 1:1 against "Atalanta." Nevertheless, they finally cheered the fans last weekend, winning 0:1 in Rome against "Lazio," which ended the game with eight men. Notably, the hosts failed to win any of their previous first-round matches in the LE 1/8 final - against "Arsenal" in 2018 and "Manchester United" three years later.
Prague's "Slavia" continues to chase the domestic title, which has slipped away from the club for the past two seasons. A single defeat in the current campaign, combined with a couple of draws, has left the white-and-reds 4 points behind leading "Sparta." However, the Prague team is doing everything possible to catch up: since November 2023 guests have not lost a single match in the national championship, though they were knocked out of the Czech Cup by "Sparta" last week (2:3).
Last weekend, the opponents met again in a crucial championship duel and drew 0:0. In the Europa League, "Slavia" outperformed "Roma", "Servette", and "Sheriff" in the group stage, achieving five wins and suffering one defeat in six rounds. Thus, despite the challenging draw, the current European campaign can be a matter of pride for the white-and-reds.
These teams have never met each other in history.
Even if "Slavia" certainly has all the aces to punish "Milan" for defensive mistakes, the hosts have a more seasoned lineup and have already proven their professional approach to the Europa League in the previous round. The Czechs will surely be a handful for the "Rossoneri" in the Czech Republic, but there's nothing to catch for the red-and-whites at San Siro. I place my bet on the routine victory of the favourite.
"Milan", just like in the confrontation with "Rennes," will try to resolve all questions about the winner of the confrontation following the home match. I place my bet on ITO 1,5 goals.
With the support of the home tribune, "Rossoneri" will seize the ball from the first minutes. My bet is on the hosts winning in corners with a handicap of -1.5.
It's important for "Slavia" to avoid a heavy defeat in Milan to have chances for success in the return match, so the team will disrupt the tempo of the opponent's attacks by all means. My bet is on Czech's victory in yellow cards.
My bet is on a precise score of 2:0 in favour of "Milan".
