The regular 2023/2024 KHL Championship is in its stride. The second match of the game day has yet another confrontation repeating yesterday's. This one, however, isn't a battle for playoffs, but a struggle to avoid being at the bottom. "Admiral" from Vladivostok are set to play against "Barys" from Astana.
Leonid Tambiev's team, while the second in the East, has lost chances on playoffs. However, it seemingly didn't affect "Admiral". Midway through the season, the team from Vladivostok came to terms with not making the playoffs, started to reshape the team, and prepare for the upcoming season. There's still a lot at stake for the players: contract renewals and not ending last in the conference, to name a few. With three victories in the last five matches, it's going pretty well. At present, "Admiral" stands at 11th place in the conference.
After 62 matches, the team has accrued 51 points from 13 main-time victories, seven outside of it and a further 11 defeats with a single point. In 31 matches, "Admiral" lost without scoring any additional points. With 133 goals scored, "Admiral" is no longer the least scoring team of the East, while they rank third from last with 179 goals allowed.
The club from Kazakhstan continues to finish the season without any apparent motivation. While there was hope in the beginning of 2024 that they might clinch a playoff spot or compete for higher rankings, all such hopes have dissipated now. "Barys" has lost 11 matches straight, only managing to snatch a singular point in two of those. Counting the total, "Barys" has sustained a loss in 15 out of their last 16 games. Despite the criticism aimed at the team from Astana, their primary task now is to prepare for the World Championship coming up in May.
Currently, "Barys" stands at the 12th place in the conference. After 62 matches, the club has accumulated 46 points. The total score for the club from Astana counts 10 normal time victories, nine beyond it, and eight defeats with one point. In 35 matches, "Barys" lost without any extra points. The club from Astana is worst in the East for both scored (129) and conceded goals (189).
"Admiral" Vladivostok and "Barys" Astana have played 34 matches against each other: "Admiral" won 16 times, while "Barys" claimed victory in 18 games. The score linings were 4:3 in one win for "Barys". On the other hand, "Admiral" emerged victorious in the last match with a 4:2 score, and another one, where "Admiral" won on penalty shots with the scoreline reading 3:2.
While winning two matches in two days is a daunting task, I believe the team from Vladivostok appears more formidable right now.
As for total bets, TO (4.5) at 1.92 seems to be the best choice. "Barys" has been letting in a lot of goals lately, while "Admiral" has been scoring a fair number too. In this respect, both teams jointly scoring five goals appears to be a realistic outcome.
