In the third match of the men's Euroleague quarterfinals series, Maccabi will be playing against Panathinaikos.
The Israelis started off with a confident home victory over Partizan (96:81). However, in the second tour, Maccabi surprisingly succumbed to Valencia away. In the next away game, the team from Tel Aviv gained a hard-fought victory in overtime over Panathinaikos (81:86). The next round ended in a crushing defeat from Monaco (107:79). Victories over Italian Olimpia (90:98) and Bayern (93:90) have helped the Israelis move up to the 7th place in the overall table, despite defeats from Olympiacos (74:79), Barcelona (90:92), and Real (70:99). In the next matches, Maccabi beat the weakest teams of this Euroleague, Alba (102:81), Villeurbanne (91:94), as well as Turkish Anadolu Efes, but surprisingly fell to Virtus (100:90).
The end of the calendar year was successful for the Israelis: three wins in four matches.
At the beginning of this year, the Israelis beat Monaco (93:83), Virtus (95:78), and Panathinaikos (90:75), losing to Fenerbahçe (109:74), Partizan (88:79) and Olympiacos (89:72). After the break for national teams selection, Maccabi beat Žalgiris (83:76) and Crvena zvezda (80:84). Then the team won in 4 out of 5 matches, moving up into the playoff zone. In the mini-tournament for advancement to the playoffs, the Israelis beat Baskonia (113:85) and Milan (92:86). In the first match of the quarterfinals series, Maccabi unexpectedly defeated Pao (87:91). In the second game, the Israelis lost (95:79).
Panathinaikos has amassed the most potent composition, both in terms of players and management staff, in a very long time. The appearance of Dimitris Giannakopoulos, Ergin Ataman, and Kostas Sloukas, who fled from Olympiacos, in the same club seems like the beginning of the most thrilling thriller of this European season.. Dimitris Giannakopoulos splurged heavily this off-season: 10 million for Sloukas for 3 years, 4.5 million for Juancho Hernangómez for 2 years, around 6 million for Vildoza for 3 years. But the signing of Ergin Ataman as the head coach was the main transfer of the summer.
Panathinaikos began its euro campaign with a fiery derby against Olympiacos, losing to them in overtime (77:87). They partially redeemed themselves with the fans with a victory over Bayern (78:71). Then there were two losses in a row to Fenerbahçe (83:69) and Maccabi (81:86).
In the fourth round, the Greeks beat Baskonia at home (95:81), but then again lost to Barcelona (80:72).
After that, Panathinaikos had the strongest stretch in the tournament. A series of 4 victories in a row brought the club back to the top eight, but an overtime loss to Partizan (92:87) pushed the Greek club away from the top three. Then there were two more defeats from Efes and Real.
However, the Greeks ended the calendar year with a bang, gaining 3 victories. In January, Pao suffered 2 losses and achieved 5 victories. But in February and March, the team had a very strong stretch with 8 wins in 10 games, advancing to the playoffs from the second place. In this series, the Greeks unexpectedly lost in the first home game, relinquishing the home advantage (87:91). In the second game, Pao took revenge (95:79).
In the regular season matches of the Euroleague, Maccabi prevailed (81:86; 90:75). In this series, the opponents have exchanged victories (87:91; 95:79).
The first match of this series brought a sensation, but believing in another victory for the Israelis is hard. Today, I think the visitors will secure an away win and wrap up this series before returning to Greece.
