How to play mid in League of Legends

Most League of Legends fans consider mid to be the most important lane in the game. It is important for beginners to know how to play in the mid in LoL, how to gain an advantage, and how to realize the strong sides of the champion.

What does mid mean in LoL?

Mid in LoL is the central line where heroes stand 1 on 1.

The feature of mid is that the line is equally distant from other lines and objects on the map.

The central line is the shortest path to the enemy Nexus.

What is the role of mid laners?

The primary task of a mid laner in LoL is to win the lane, outfarm the opponent, and destroy the first mid turret. The mid laner shifts to other lanes to assist teammates.

Often the team wins the match through a strong mid laner – the champion manages to win at least 2 lines – mid and 1 ally line, usually top.

How to play mid

A competent mid laner understands when it is necessary to "freeze" the line, under which situations to push, and when to go roaming or return the champion to mid.

It is desirable for the mid laner to quickly eliminate a wave of creeps, possess control spells, or abilities that deal a large amount of damage in a short period of time.

Assassins and mages are usually chosen for the role of mid laners.

Place wards

In the early stages of the game, the mid-laner in LoL has two options for placing wards:

  • In the river bush between lanes, to control the movement of the enemy jungler towards the mid and other lanes;

How to stand in mid

  • In the bushes near mid, to ensure full safety in the central lane - the enemy jungler won't be able to sneak onto the mid, the ward controls the approach to the lane.

LoL mid

By placing a ward between the lanes, the player ensures their own safety and protects an ally - it is possible to warn a companion about the approach of the enemy jungler and eliminate the situation where the opponent sneaks onto the mid and attacks 2 against 1.

Experienced players advise not to neglect wards at the start of the LoL match. Often, beginners lose mid due to a lack of vision. The death of a champion will allow the enemy mid-laner to quickly gain an advantage.

Mid lane advantage

You can win mid by continuously attacking the enemy midlaner and interfering with the opponent's farming. If an allied jungler has shifted to mid, users need to attack the enemy midlaner together. In most cases, a 2-on-1 attack is lethal for the opponent.

The midlaner needs to constantly attack the enemy. Efficient resource trading is the key to winning the mid-lane. Professionals do not spare mana and spells. Most likely, the opponent will survive, but the aggression will force the enemy to retreat under the tower, where the champion will not be able to kill minions and will not get experience and gold.

During attacks on the opponent, it's important to maintain map control so that the opponent's jungler does not attack from the bushes and shift the advantage to the side of the enemy team.

Farm in the mid

The main task of the midder in the early minutes of LoL is to farm, finish off enemy minions and prevent the opponent from finishing off allied creeps. For example, dealing damage with spells.

In League of Legends, there is no deny mechanic - a player cannot finish off allied creeps.

You shouldn't constantly attack minions, you should only land the final blow to keep the line further away from the enemy tower. Minions should not be allowed to get too close to your own tower - the structure deals a lot of damage to entities.

If the minions have reached the attack zone of the tower, experienced users use the variant of finishing:

  • swordsmen minions - 2 tower strikes, 1 champion strike;
  • mage minions - champion strike, tower strike, champion strike.
Esports professionals advise not to skimp on spells if there is no opportunity to finish off the minion with an attack.

Roaming is important.

Many mid-laners in LoL are criticized for not roaming - not pursuing opponents on the lanes. In the view of most users, a mid-laner starts attacking the side lanes upon reaching the sixth level of development.

Experienced players know, if a player has lost the mid, it's better to continue to farm. There's a high likelihood that shifting to top or bot won't bring success to the defeated champion.

It's not always necessary to wait until you've reached the sixth level. If the opponent is not paying attention and moves too far from the tower, a mistake is a chance to kill the enemy.

Before going to another lane, it's necessary to push mid, so the enemy mid-laner is faced with a choice:

  • stay in mid and likely lose an ally;
  • follow the opponent who left the lane, lose minions due to tower attacks, not get gold and experience.

High-ranking players often arrange a "false" roam - they push a wave of minions and lead the champion into the forest. This tactic creates an illusion for the opponent that the player has shifted to another lane, but the user hides the champion in the bushes in the forest.

The opponent quickly kills the wave of minions with spells and follows the player. The champion attacks the enemy mid-laner, who doesn't have access to all spells due to cooldowns. As a result of the attack, the opponent doesn't always die, but is forced to play more cautiously, which reduces the farm of the enemy.

Forester's insurance

In LoL, it's crucial for the mid laner to back up their allied jungler. When an attack on the jungler occurs, moving into the forest to help your ally is a good move.

Such shifts help to survive and in some cases completely change the course of the battle.

When to push

Esports athletes do not pressure the opponent's tower from the first minutes of the match. The mid-laner levels up the champion to level six and buys starting items. Once the necessary resources are acquired, the champion can start pushing the lane.

The ideal scenario is to drive the enemy midlaner off the lane to the base to restore health.

In case of a successful maneuver, the player will be able to almost safely destroy the first tower in the midlane.

The second opportune moment for a push is when the opponent's midlaner has left the lane. For example, the enemy champion decided to attack the top lane. In this situation, the opponent will face a question - continue the attack or return to the lane to defend the tower.
