Slovenia and Argentina will clash in the Volleyball Nations League quarter-final on Friday, 28th June. The match kicks off at 18:00
The Slovenian national team missed out on Olympic qualification initially, but they will still be seen in Paris. This accomplishment came courtesy of their strong performance in the group stage of the Nations League. They qualified for the Games through the world rankings, where they secured the 4th position. This marks the first time in their history the team will compete in the Olympic Games.
Currently, the team is proving they fully deserve their place on the world's biggest stage. Their statistics in the Nations League are astounding – just 1 loss in 12 matches. They were beaten only by Japan with a score of 1:3. However, following that defeat, they bounced back and now enjoy an unbeaten streak of five matches. As a result, they occupy the top spot in the Nations League standings.
In the playoffs, Georgi Kretsu’s team has hit good physical form. They are already considered one of the main tournament favourites.
The Argentine team is known for its inconsistency. Consequently, they only managed to secure 8th place in the round-robin phase. To advance to the playoffs, Marcelo Méndez’s squad had to give their absolute all. During the main stage, the team won 6 out of 12 matches, and they currently have 18 points.
In the regular season, the Argentines struggled against the top contenders and even gave away points to mid-tier teams. They managed to defeat only Canada with a score of 3:1. Against other teams that reached the "final eight," the Latin American players suffered losses.
Historically, the teams have faced each other 5 times. Slovenia leads with a 4-1 record. They have dominated the last four encounters with scores of 3:0, 3:1, 3:1, and 3:0. The most recent match was in the first round of the 2024 Nations League, where the Slovenian team won 3:0.
Slovenia is the clear favourite for this match. Their strengths lie in their head-to-head statistics, winning streak, and physical condition. Moreover, they have the added incentive to prove that they deserved their spot in the Olympic Games. Additionally, attacker Rok Možič has returned to the lineup, further strengthening the team.
Argentina faces a tough challenge as they are significantly lower in class compared to their opponent. Georgi Kretsu’s expertise with the current squad ensures there won’t be any surprises here.
