Today, in the semi-final leg of the Austrian Volleyball Championship, Hartberg and Waldviertel will face off.
Hartberg Volleyball Club has shown remarkable results in the current Austrian Bundesliga season, confidently reaching the semi-finals of the national championship. The team impressed with their performance in the best-of-two series against Sokola, finishing it with an aggregate score of 2-0. In the first match, Hartberg dominated, winning 3-0 in sets, with two of them ending in a stiff competition with a score of 25:21, and the second set was taken even more convincingly – 25:17. In the second match of the confrontation, Hartberg also demonstrated their superiority, winning with a score of 3:1, despite losing the second set 25:27.
However, despite success in the championship, Hartberg faced a crushing defeat in the Austrian Cup final, where the team lost to the Aich/Dob 0:3, giving way with a score of 15:25. This match showed that even the strongest teams can't always maintain stability throughout the season.
In the regular season of the Austrian Bundesliga, Hartberg took second place with a result of 14 wins and 4 losses, confirming their high game level. In the last match of the season, where they had already secured a quarterfinal berth, Hartberg fielded their second line-up, losing to league leader Tirol 0:3 in sets. Hartberg has shown a strong game throughout the season, confidently progressing through the championship, and demonstrating their ambitions to fight for the top awards, despite the defeat in the Austrian Cup final.
The Austrian volleyball club Waldviertel demonstrates its resilience and ambition, successfully making it to the semi-finals of the local championship, despite starting difficulties in the series against Ried. After starting with a defeat 1:3 in sets, Waldviertel managed to break the course of the confrontation, confidently winning the next two home matches with scores of 3:0 and 3:1 respectively, allowing the team to continue the fight for the championship title.
In the regular Bundesliga season, Waldviertel took third place with an excellent result of 13 wins and 5 losses, thereby securing a high place in the table after a series of three consecutive victories. These victories were won against Klagenfurt on February 10th with a score of 3:2, Graz on February 3rd with a score of 3:0, and Weiz on January 27th with a score of 3:0.
However, Waldviertel's journey in the Austrian Cup ended at the semi-final stage in December, where they lost to the eventual champion Aich/Dob 0:3.
In the last 5 encounters between Hartberg and Waldviertel, Hartberg claimed three victories, while Waldviertel won twice. Starting with a loss for Hartberg on December 1, 2021, with a score of 0:3, the series continued in favour of Hartberg, who managed to prevail in the following three matches. The meeting on November 26, 2022, ended with a win for Hartberg with a score of 3:1, and then there were two more victories on February 11 and September 30, 2023, with a score of 3:1. However, the last match between the teams on December 2, 2023, ended with a victory for Waldviertel 3:2.
The visitors overcame a more serious opponent in the quarterfinals than Hartberg, and considering Waldviertel's last away win 3:2 in sets, I expect an equal match and place my bet on the plus handicap for Waldviertel in sets.
