Trentino and Modena will lock horns in the first match of the Italian Superlega quarterfinals tomorrow evening.
The volleyball club Trentino, taking leading positions in the Italian Superlega and the international arena, has once again affirmed its status as a favourite, closing the regular season in first position with a noteworthy total of 19 victories and just 3 losses. Directly before the play-offs, the team decided to rest their main lineup, resulting in two losses to Padova and Perugia, each with a score of 1:3. These results didn't reflect on the overall performance of Trentino, as prior to this, the team only lost one match in the entire tournament, a January tie-break against Monza with a 2:3 score.
In the Champions League, Trentino also exhibited a high level of play, emerging from the group with 5 victories from 6 matches. A sole loss against Jastrzębski Węgiel, in which the second lineup was fielded, didn't impact their position, proving Trentino's readiness for serious international challenges. The move to the Champions League quarterfinals was another notch where Trentino confidently defeated Berlin, leaving no chances for the opposition with a total score of 6:0 in sets.
Modena is a team with variable successes in the current Italian Superlega season. They managed to secure a place in the play-offs, ending the regular championship in 8th place. Their pathway in the league sported a stable mid-table position, trailing 8-9 points from the 7th standing team, Verona. This made it impossible for them to go any further up by season's conclusion. Starting from the season opening, Modena demonstrated average results, resulting in an equal count of victories and defeats — 11-11. This stand was quite predictable considering their performances throughout the season.
In the last 5 Superlega matches before play-offs, Modena showed character, securing 3 victories over bottom teams, thus underlining their ability to battle against comparable or lower level teams. However, encounters with league leaders like Trentino and Perugia ended up unsuccessful for Modena, demonstrating the gulf in class - 0:3 and 1:3.
In recent encounters between Trentino and Modena, Trentino holds an advantage. Out of the last 5 matches, Trentino emerged victorious in four, showcasing their strength and playing levels. In the last bout on 18th February 2024, Trentino confidently won over Modena with a 3:0 score. On 10th December 2023, Modena managed to take their revenge, defeating Trentino with a 3:1 score. On 12th March and 28th December 2022, in the Italian Cup, confrontations ended in Trentino's favour with a 3:0 score. In a match held on 1st November 2022 within the scope of the Italian Supercup, Trentino once again defeated Modena, this time with a score of 3:1.
Trentino enters as an explicit favourite and is expected to win at least 2 sets. Main home players have had ample rest and, in a 'best-of-three' series, should quickly progress to the semi-finals, considering the forthcoming Italian Champions League semi-finals.
