Today, on the 25th of June, in the 1/16 finals of the WTA 500 series tournament in Eastbourne, England, Czech player Karolina Muchova will meet former Russian, now representing Armenia, Elina Avanesyan.
The Czech tennis player, ranked 34th in the WTA rankings, will be playing her first official match since September in the UK. This hiatus was due to a severe wrist injury. In February this year, she underwent surgery on the affected area and gradually returned to training. Last season was the most successful in the career of the 27-year-old Czech. Karolina finished in 8th place in the WTA rankings, reaching the Roland Garros final where she narrowly lost to the queen of clay, Iga Swiatek, in a gruelling battle, 1:2 (2:6, 7:5, 4:6). On her way to the final, she defeated formidable opponents such as Sakkari, Podoroska, Pavlyuchenkova, and Sabalenka. Additionally, she beat today's opponent, Avanesyan. Although Muchova had an excellent season on hard and clay courts, her grass season was less successful. At the Wimbledon tournament, she was eliminated in the first round by the unheralded German, Jule Niemeier, 1:2 (4:6, 7-5, 1:6). Further, her previous attempt at Wimbledon was also unsuccessful, falling to Romanian Simona Halep, 0:2 (3:6, 2:6). However, in 2021, Karolina reached the quarter-finals, where she was stopped by German Kerber, 0:2 (3:6, 2:6).
This season has been quite successful for the newly minted Armenian tennis player, Elina. She holds the 74th spot in the WTA rankings. Elina has performed admirably in Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the 1/8 finals at Roland Garros and the 1/16 finals at the Australian Open. Among her notable victories are the rapidly progressing Chinese player Zheng Qinwen, 2:1 (3:6, 6:3, 7:6), Russian Anna Blinkova, 2:0 (6:3, 6:0), and Greek Maria Sakkari, 2:0 (6:4, 6:4). Elina has also showcased strong performances on grass this season, winning 7 out of her last 10 grass-court matches. In the Eastbourne tournament qualification, she defeated Danish tennis player Clara Tauson, 2:0 (7:6, 6:2), and Croatian Petra Martic, 2:0 (6:3, 6:4).
Karolina Muchova and Elina Avanesyan have crossed paths only once, which was in the aforementioned match last season at Roland Garros. The Czech, in excellent form, defeated the former Russian in two sets, 2:0 (6:4, 6:3). Despite the loss, Elina played well, managing to break four times, though she struggled to hold her serve confidently.
Considering that Karolina has not played any official matches this season, one can assume that opening with a rival from the top 100 will be challenging, especially since grass is not her favourite surface. Elina, on the other hand, is in good form, as evidenced by her recent matches. Moreover, she looks confident on grass. Thus, it seems reasonable to bet on the victory of the Armenian tennis player in this match.
