On Sunday, 2nd June, Venice will host Cremonese in the return leg of the Serie B playoffs. After a tense 0-0 draw in the first match, both teams are set to start afresh, leaving no room for error.
The match will take place in Venice at the Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium.
Finishing third in the league, Venice missed the chance to directly qualify for Serie A, thereby entering the playoffs. The hosts faced Palermo in the semi-finals and won both matches (0-1 away and 2-1 at home). After holding off Cremonese in the first leg with a 0-0 draw, thanks to goalkeeper Jesse Joronen's saves, the hosts now aim to finish the job at home.
Venice has won their last four home games in a row – against Palermo, Feralpisalò (2-1), Cremonese (2-1), and Brescia (2-0), averaging 2 goals per game. Moreover, Venice emerged as the best home team in Serie B this season, earning 42 points in 19 matches while scoring 41 and conceding 25. Fans will be delighted to know that Venice has conceded only thrice in their last four home matches.
Cremonese desperately needed a win in the first leg to head to Venice with a comforting advantage, but the red-and-whites failed to break through. They will now rely on counter-attacks. Notably, the visitors have not won in their last four away games, drawing three times – with Catanzaro (0-0), Parma (1-1), and Catanzaro again in the last round. Cremonese also suffered a 2-1 loss to Venice in late April.
Giovanni Stroppa's side finished fourth in Serie B with 67 points, ranking second in the league for away points, just behind Parma. Cremonese have conceded only five goals in their last six matches. Due to injuries, the visitors will be without goalkeeper Sarr, Jonsson (2 goals in 13 matches), and Afena-Gyan.
These teams faced each other twice in the past season, each winning at home (Cremonese 1-0 in the first round, Venice 2-1 in the return leg). The first playoff match, held on Thursday evening, ended in a goalless draw.
To advance to Serie A, Venice needs to win, and the support of the home fans will give Paolo's squad extra strength. Cremonese are strong on the road and will rely on their quick counter-attacks. I abstain from naming a favourite and predict a draw, similar to the previous match.
Both teams are well aware of the price of a potential mistake and will not rush things. Each side possesses a solid defence by second division standards, making it sensible to bet on a total goals under 2.5.
With home support, Venice will play a more attacking game, making it a good bet for them to win in corners.
Each team aims to secure the needed result for promotion, so betting on a total over 3.5 yellow cards is a safe choice.
I predict a 1-1 draw.
