On Saturday, 25 May, in the 38th round of the Italian Serie A, Juventus will host Monza at their home ground. Despite the Bianconeri recently winning the national cup and securing a return to the Champions League in autumn, their season has been extremely disappointing, leading to Massimiliano Allegri's dismissal.
The match will take place in Turin at the Allianz Stadium.
Having long contested the Scudetto with Inter, Juventus significantly declined in the second half of the campaign. A series of poor performances did not stop the old lady from securing a Champions League spot, currently 4th in the Serie A standings, trailing the top six by 5 points. Bianconeri won only two of their last 16 league games, drawing 10 times and losing 4. In their last six rounds, the hosts drew with Torino (0:0), Cagliari (2:2), Milan (0:0), Roma (1:1), Salernitana (1:1), and Bologna last Monday (3:3).
An interesting fact: in their Serie A history, Juventus had previously achieved seven consecutive draws only once, from March to April 1971. However, they managed to secure a title by winning the Coppa Italia final against Atalanta (1:0) thanks to a lone goal by Dušan Vlahović. Notably, the hosts occupy only the sixth spot in the overall standings for points gained on home turf (37 in 18 matches, scoring 24 goals and conceding 11).
For the second consecutive season, Monza managed to avoid a relegation battle, finding themselves mid-table. Currently, Lombardy's team sits 12th in Serie A, having accrued 45 points across 37 rounds. Running out of motivation in the final matches, the White-Reds have slowed down: since returning from the international break in March, the guests haven't won a single match (3 draws and 5 losses).
After a home draw with Lazio (2:2), Monza lost to Fiorentina (2:1) and the sinking Frosinone (0:1) last weekend. Despite their inability to finish lower than 12th and a potential success elevating them above Genoa, fan disillusionment is quite understandable—autumn aspirations of breaking into the top half now seem distant. It’s important to note that Raffaele Palladino’s men rank ninth for points accrued away (21 in 18 away matches, with 16 goals scored and 23 conceded).
In the first round, Juventus struggled to secure a win in Monza (1:2). However, the previous direct encounter between these teams in Turin saw the White-Reds triumph (0:2).
Juventus lost their head coach last week, but paradoxically, this might revitalise the team. The Bianconeri did win a trophy this campaign and now look to please their fans with a rare victory. Monza has not tasted victory since March and are already thinking about the upcoming break. Bet on a Juventus triumph with a -1 handicap.
Juventus should break free from Allegri’s purely cautious defensive football. I’m betting on the home side ITO 1.5 goals.
With the support of home fans, Juventus will undoubtedly play the leading role and attack more aggressively. Bet on a Bianconeri triumph in corners with a -2.5 handicap.
Monza will have to defend a lot and contain the opponent’s quick flanks. Thus, bet on the guests winning in yellow cards.
I predict a 2:0 victory for Juventus.
