On Sunday, 5th of May, during the 35th round of the Italian Serie A, "Milan" will host "Genoa" on their home turf. The "Rossoneri" run the risk of ending the season on a high note and have not known victory for five consecutive matches, while the visitors are still harbouring hopes of finishing in the top half of the table.
The match will take place in Milan at the San Siro Stadium.
Comfortably sitting in 2nd place in the Serie A standings, "Milan" has practically guaranteed their participation in the next Champions League. After 6 matches without a defeat (5 wins and 1 draw), the "Rossoneri" did not look so confident in the last three fights: they lost at home to "Inter" (1:2) and shared points with "Sassuolo" (3:3) and "Juventus" last weekend (0:0). Moreover, in the Europa League, the hosts were knocked out by "Roma" in the quarterfinals stage (3:1 on aggregate).
Since head coach Stefano Pioli took over, he has never had a longer unbeaten run, and according to press reports, the club is already looking for a new manager. At the same time, "Milan" will try to avoid three consecutive defeats at San Siro for the first time since 2014, as the "Rossoneri" are ranked only 6th in terms of points gained at home (35 points in 16 meetings, scoring 27 goals, conceding 10).
Currently 12th in the Serie A standings, "Genoa" has been doing well since returning to the top division. With 4 rounds to go until the end of the championship and a 13-point gap from the relegation zone, the "Griffins" are not at all nervous about retaining their elite status. After a series of good results, Alberto Gilardino's charges have slowed down slightly: they claimed just one win in the last seven fights, drew three times and lost three times.
However, last Monday, Genovese re-pleased their tifosi by beating "Cagliari" 3:0. Albert Gudmundsson scored the third goal of the red-blues, and the Icelander has more productive actions than any other player from a debutant team in the top 5 European leagues. In addition, the Ligurian club has lost only one of its last 9 away matches in the national championship.
In the first lap, "Milan" narrowly won in Genoa with a 0:1 score. Moreover, the "Rossoneri" consistently came out on top in the last five head-to-heads.
Given that "Milan" has slowed down and staffing issues will not allow Pioli to count on the optimal line-up tonight, there are all the prerequisites to believe in the success of the Ligurian club. "Genoa" excels away from home and has suffered only one defeat in 2024 on enemy territory. I trust Gilardino's charges and bet on the guests' fore, 1.5.
In the three previous head-to-heads between these teams, "Genoa" did not score, which should change now. In addition to the personnel losses of "Rossoneri", the guests have an excellent attack line lead by Gudmundsson, thus I bet on a goal from the visitors.
Supported by their home crowd, "Milan" will undoubtedly take control of the game and attack more – I bet on the home team winning on corners with a 1.5 handicap.
The match holds no significance for either team from the tournament perspective, hence there's no reason to expect an abundance of rough tackles from the players. I am putting money on the total yellow cards being less than 4.5.
I'd wager on the exact score being 1:1.
