On Monday, 15th April, within the framework of the 32nd round of the Italian Serie A, Atalanta will host Verona on their home ground. In the first quarter-finals match of the Europa League, the Bergamascos entirely demolished Liverpool on Anfield, while the Mastiffs are fighting for survival and lag by one point from the safety zone.
Atalanta: Carnesecchi; Toloi, Hien, Djimsiti; Hateboer, Ederson, Koopmeiners, Ruggeri; Miranchuk, Lookman; De Ketelaere.
Verona: Montipo; Centonze, Magnani, Dawidowicz, Cabal; Duda, Folorunsho; Suslov, Bonazzoli, Lazovic; Noslin.
The match will take place in Bergamo at the Atleti Azzurri Stadium.
Occupying 6th place in the Serie A table, having one match in hand and lagging behind the top four by 8 points, it's unlikely for the Bergamascos to make it into the Champions League through the national championship. Gian Piero Gasperini's charges are not in the best of form recently: in the last 6 rounds, they've only won once, drawn twice, and lost three times. After a brilliant 0:3 victory over Napoli, La Dea capitulated last weekend to humble Cagliari (2:1).
In the Coppa Italia, Atalanta lost the first semi-final match to Fiorentina (1:0) due to Mandragora's lone goal, but in the Europa League, the hosts performed a miracle, defeating Liverpool at Anfield by 0:3 on last Thursday: Gianluca Scamacca scored twice, and Mario Pasalic finally nailed the Merseysiders in the 83rd minute of the match. The Blue-and-Whites have won seven of their last eight home matches in the championship, scoring almost three goals per game on home soil (with only 10 goals conceded)!
Under relegation threat, Verona currently occupies 17th place in the Serie A table, pulling 1 point away from the higher-ranked Empoli. The team recently secured two consecutive victories (over Sassuolo and Lecce), but disappointed fans again in the last 3 rounds. Thus, the Mastiffs settled for a draw with Cagliari (1:1), then lost at home to Milan (1:3) and Genoa last weekend (1:2). Despite Federico Bonazzoli opening the score in the eighth minute of the match, the Griffins equalised the score at the end of the first half, and Gudmundsson put the red-blues ahead after the break.
Meanwhile, the guests have avoided defeat in three of the last four away games in the national championship, and in terms of points collected away from home, Marco Baroni's side occupies the 15th position (10 points in 16 matches). Verona is having some difficulties creating in attack, scoring less than a goal per game (28 in 31 rounds).
After suffering a 0:1 defeat at the Stadio Bentegodi in the September match, Verona hasn't been able to rack up points in clashes with the Bergamascos for three times in a row.
Atalanta has won eight out of the last 11 matches against Verona, but this time, an easy victory should not be expected. The Mastiffs are in dire need of points and are fighting for survival, while the Blue-and-Whites will be focused on the upcoming return match in the Europa League against Liverpool. Rotation from Gasperini is simply inevitable, and the suspensions of key players De Roon and Zapacosta bode nothing good for the favourites. My prediction is the underdog's handicap 1.5.
Verona managed to score at least once in three of the last five meetings with Atalanta. Given that the guests are in desperate need of points, it's logical to bet on their goal on Monday.
Atalanta launches an average of 5.5 corners per match, while the guests have only 3.4. We can confidently bet on Bergamascos to win this indicator with a handicap of -1.5.
Verona will be seeking fortune in one-on-one battles and will try to impose their style of play on the opponent – with an abundance of fouls. I expect no less than three earned yellow cards from the visitors.
I'll bet on the exact score of 1:1.
