In the 31st round of the Italian Serie A, Salernitana will host Sassuolo on Friday 5th April. The hosts have found themselves firmly at the bottom of the league table, trailing their peers by 10 points, whilst Neroverdi continue to battle for elite status.
Salernitana: Costil; Pierozzi, Manolas, Boateng, Pellegrino; Tchaouna, Sambia, Coulibaly, Bradaric; Candreva; Simy.
Sassuolo: Consigli; Toljan, Tressoldi, Ferrari, Doig; Boloca, Henrique; Defrel, Thorstvedt, Castillejo; Pinamonti.
The match will take place in Salerno at the Arechi Stadium.
This season Salernitana have often disappointed their supporters and are currently occupying the very bottom of the Serie A table with just 14 points from 30 matches. The club harbour no illusions about their chances to stay in the top division (they're 11 points shy from the safety of the 17th position). The failure to register a win in the last 12 games (2 draws and 10 losses) indicates that Salernitana might have thrown in the towel: after playing on par with Udinese (a 1:1 draw), they lost to Cagliari (2:4), Lecce (0:1), and Bologna last Monday (3:0).
Not even coaching staff changes have managed to improve the situation: Filippo Inzaghi was replaced by Fabio Liverani, subsequently followed by Stefano Colantuono. Unsurprisingly, Salernitana hold the last place in terms of points from home matches: only 7 in 15 matches, with 13 goals scored and 20 conceded.
Sassuolo sit 19th in the Serie A table and are 1 point away from the relegation safe zone. Therefore, Neroverdi will have to double their efforts, especially considering that they won their home game against Frosinone (1:0) after 8 rounds without victories. However, the team lost 1:0 to Roma post that and last Monday, they played a home draw with Udinese (1:1). Thanks to Gregoire Defrel's efforts, David Ballardini's proteges took the lead on the 41st minute, but Udinese quickly responded with a goal from Florian Thauvin.
The fact that Sassuolo hadn't finished below the 13th position over the last nine years makes the current standing uncomfortable for the fans. The visitors have been performing poorly on away games: they managed to secure only 8 points in 15 matches, scoring 15 goals and conceding 31. It's important to note that despite poor results, Ballardini has managed to tighten up defence: Sassuolo hasn't conceded more than a single goal per match in the last four rounds.
The first-round duel ended in a 2:2 draw.
Sassuolo, far from their peak form, have enough resources to secure the three points on Friday. Salernitana seems to be resigned to their imminent departure from the league and is going through a deep crisis after three consecutive defeats. My prediction - a Neroverdi's victory, with a 0 handicap.
All four previous meetings between these teams have been rich in goals (on average, 4 per match). As both teams have nothing to lose and everything to gain, I'd bet on total goals over 2.5.
Sassuolo average 5.4 corners per match, and Salernitana average 4.2. I'm expecting a Neroverdi victory on this parameter.
Both teams are fighting for survival and won't be sparing themselves in one-on-one battles - I predict at least four yellow cards shown in Salerno.
I predict a precise score of 1:2 in favor of Sassuolo.
