On Monday, 1 April, as part of the 30th round of the Italian Serie A, Sassuolo will host Udinese on their home field. The hosts, currently second from the bottom in the standings, can potentially leave the relegation zone with a victory, while the Zebras failed to extend their unbeaten run to three matches, losing to Torino 2 weeks ago.
This season, Sassuolo is in serious danger of relegation, occupying the 19th place in the Serie A table and trailing the safety of 17th position by 2 points. The team recently broke an 8-round winless run (1 draw and 7 losses), claiming a home triumph over Frosinone with a 1:0 scoreline. Unfortunately, after that, Neroverdi suffered another defeat on the road against Roma (1:0) – a solitary goal by Lorenzo Pellegrini at the 50th minute made the difference. Consequently, the Emilia-Romagna team has gathered only four (!) points in their last 10 outings and registers just two wins in 2024 – the second was won on 6 January over Fiorentina with a 1:0 scoreline. To add to their woes, the hosts have been struggling at home: they've accumulated only 15 points from 14 home matches (the fourth worst in the league), scored 18 goals, and conceded 25.
Following the duel with Udinese, Neroverdi will face off against Salernitana and Lecce in April – the outcomes of these duels will determine the team's future. Sassuolo will still be without their key winger Domenico Berardi (9 goals and 3 assists), whose season is already over due to a severe injury. Moreover, defender Ehrlich will be suspended on Monday. However, in good news: centre-half Tolyan has recovered from injury, while Doig (defender) and Torvstedt (midfielder) have served their suspensions. In attack, veteran Pinamonti (9 goals) is expected to start, with Udinese being the second most prolific club in the Italian forward's career (three goals) after Roma (five goals).
Currently, Udinese sits at 14th place in the Serie A table, just two points clear of the relegation zone. The side from Friuli has shown a small uptick in recent weeks, which has allowed them to climb a few spots in the standings: the Zebras have lost only 2 of their last 7 league games, winning twice and drawing three times. After a sensational victory over Lazio (1:2), the visitors succumbed to Torino (0:2) prior to the international break – goals were scored by Duvan Zapata and Nikola Vlasic. Remarkably, Gabriele Cioffi’s charges also perform fairly well on the road: they have picked up 15 points in 14 away outings, scored 11 times, and conceded 21 goals.
Given that in April the Black-and-Whites will face Inter, Roma and Bologna, the team simply must snatch points on Monday night. Udinese’s squad is still without Ebossé and Deulofeu, who haven't recovered from their physical ailments. Additionally, midfielder Valase miss out due to an accumulation of yellow cards, but forwards Lucca (7 goals and 3 assists) and Thauvin (4 goals and 3 assists) should be back. The team's midfield continues being orchestrated by veterans Pereyra and Lovric, while Ferreira, Biyol, and Giannetti will make up the trio of centre-backs.
Udinese will aim to extend their longest unbeaten streak in Serie A against any opponent on Monday – the last time Neroverdi overcame the Zebras was way back in 2018! The first-leg encounter ended in a 2:2 stalemate.
Lately, Udinese is gradually returning to former conditions, which led the team to escape the relegation zone. A victory on Monday would continue to keep the Zebras at a comfortable distance from the bottom three, especially given the fact that a setback is not an option: their schedule in April doesn't favour the visitors. Sassuolo, without the injured Berardi, is set for disappointment, and recent results against their next opponents don't spell anything good for the hosts. We confidently bet on a Udinese victory with a handicap of 0.
