On Saturday, 9th March, within the 28th round of the Italian Serie A, Sassuolo will welcome Frosinone on their pitch. The home team holds second to last place in the league standings and have suffered four consecutive defeats, while the visitors managed to break their unfortunate streak thanks to a draw with Lecce last weekend.
Sassuolo, which was not expected to perform so disastrously in the current campaign, will need to make significant efforts to avoid relegation. The team occupies 19th place in the Serie A table and is three points adrift of the safety zone. Having failed to win in the last eight rounds (1 draw and 7 defeats), the hosts are greatly troubling their fans: the "Neroverdi" lost 4 recent matches in the league - Atalanta (3:0), Empoli (2:3), Napoli (1:6), and Hellas Verona last weekend (1:0). These results led to the resignation of De Zerbi from the head coach role, and Davide Ballardini was appointed in his place. The new coach's primary task is to enhance the team's defence as Sassuolo allowed an entire 55 goals in 27 rounds (only Frosinone, conceding 56, performed worse in Serie A) and has not kept a clean sheet in their last nine games. In their home games, Sassuolo are equally lacklustre: having won only 12 points in 13 home matches, they conceded 25 goals while scoring only 17.
The Neroverdi received very unfortunate news from their medical staff when it was announced that winger Domenico Berardi (9 goals and 3 assists) will be sidelined due to an injury for the rest of the season—a considerable blow to the host's attacking capacity. Adding to this is the absence of the young defender Witi, on loan from Nice (9 games). However, Coach Ballardini can rely on striker Andrea Pinamonti (9 goals) who scored a brace in the first leg of the current season versus Frosinone.
Returning to the elite division last summer, Frosinone currently sits in 16th place in the Serie A table, just one point clear of the relegation zone. Despite a good start to the season, the team experienced a drop in performance in recent weeks: in the last 14 rounds, the "Canaries" have only one victory, three draws and ten defeats. Last weekend, Frosinone achieved a home draw against Lecce (1:1), thus ending a run of four consecutive losses (against AC Milan, Fiorentina, Roma, and Juventus). However, what can be a significant threat to the coaching staff is the team's dreadful away record—it's only earned three points away from home in current Serie A season. Only Almeria and Granada have worse statistics (both have two points) in the top-5 European leagues. Surprisingly enough, Frosinone's 12 goals in 13 away games aren't the lowest in Serie A, but their 33 goals conceded away from home is more than any other team in Italy's elite division.
In the first leg, the team of Eusebio Di Francesco claimed a 4:2 victory over the "Neroverdi", and a similar result in Reggio Emilia will allow Frosinone to beat the same opponent twice in one season—a result the "Canaries" have not achieved since 2015-16 season.
Whilst Frosinone does have terrible performances away from home, they find themselves in a somewhat better position than the "Neroverdi". The hosts not only changed their manager last week but also carry a run of four consecutive defeats. As the outcome of this upcoming match may dictate the fight for survival, it is vital for the "Canaries" not to lose. Hence, my prediction is on a handicap (0) for the visitors.
