On Saturday, 27th January, in the framework of the 22nd round of Italian Serie A, Milan will host Bologna on their home ground. While the Rossoneri are among the top three and have won five of their last six matches, the visitors recently started losing their hopes for a finish in the European cup zone.
Milan: Maignan; Calabria, Kjaer, Gabbia, Hernandez; Reijnders, Adli; Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Leao; Giroud.
Bologna: Skorupski; De Silvestri, Beukema, Calafiori, Kristiansen; Freuler, Aebischer; Orsolini, Ferguson, Saelemaekers; Zirkzee.
The match will take place in Milan at the San Siro Stadium.
Securely in third place in Serie A, Milan have solid chances to take part in the next Champions League. Yet, the Lombardi will certainly have a mountain to climb to get back into the Scudetto race (7 points off the leader). Victorious in four consecutive national championship matches against Sassuolo (1:0), Empoli (0:3), Roma (3:1) and Udinese last weekend (2:3), the Rossoneri produced match-winning performances during the winter.
However, Milan was disappointed in the national cup quarterfinals at home, losing 1:2 to Atalanta. After finishing third in their Champions League group, Milan will face Rennes in the Europa League play-offs.
Finished in the upper part of the league table last year, Bologna currently hustles for the European cup spots. Bologna holds the seventh spot in the Serie A standings, trailing only two points behind fourth-place Fiorentina. Unfortunately, in recent weeks the visitors have lost their momentum. The team couldn't defeat Genoa at home (1:1), then suffered losses to Udinese (3:0) and Cagliari (2:1) last weekend.
They are now winless in their last three championship games. In the Italian Cup quarterfinals, Bologna resisted but was hit by the penalty shoot-out defeat to Fiorentina (0:0). Forward Van Hooijdonk, winger Ndoj and defender Sumaoro are out for the visitors.
Bologna failed to score in their last three away games against Milan, and the first round fixture ended with a 0:2 victory for the visiting Rossoneri.
Milan, victorious in eight of their last ten home games in Serie A allowing only five goals, is my favourite for the win. Bologna, on the other hand, have lost steam over the winter and even have fallen from the European cup zone.
Given that Milan scored nearly two goals per game at home and that the team scored 13 goals in the last four rounds, I confidently expect Rossoneri's individual total to exceed 1.5 goals.
Milan will be in possession and likely to exceed the number of corners compared to Bologna (Asian Handicap -1.5).
Both teams have an average of 2.5 yellow cards per game, hence I predict the total yellow cards to exceed 3.5.
My score prediction is a 2:1 win for Milan.
