On Saturday, 3rd February, Everton will host Tottenham in the scope of 23rd round of the Premier League. Midweek, the 'Toffees' have again fallen into the relegation zone following a goalless draw against Fulham, while Spurs emerged victorious from a tense London derby, defeating Brentford by 3:2.
Everton: Pickford; Patterson, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Harrison, Onana, Garner, Gueye, McNeil; Calvert-Lewin.
Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogy; Sarr, Bentancur; Kulusevski, Maddison, Werner; Richarlison.
The clash will take place in Liverpool, at Goodison Park Stadium.
Everton was fined with 10 points for violating the financial fair play rules and found itself in serious danger of relegation this season. Ahead of the 23rd round kick-off, they are 18th in the Premier League table, one point behind the 17th-placed Luton, but with a game on hand. After a streak of successful results, Everton has been on a slide since late December, not winning any of their last five league matches (2 draws, 3 losses). Last weekend, Everton were defeated at home by Luton in the 1/16 finals of the FA Cup (1:2), and this week they played a goalless draw with Fulham (0:0). In total, 46 shots were fired in West London - 21 of them towards Pickford, while Everton had possession of the ball only for 31% of the time
What may concern the Toffees' fans is the fact that Everton failed to score in the last three rounds of the league. Sean Dyche still can't utilize the experienced Doucore (6 goals), Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes (loaned at Lille last season), and long-absent Dele Alli, as they are all injured. The presence of experienced right-back Coleman also remains questionable. Encouraging news came with the return of Senegalese Gana Gueye, who got dismissed with his national team from the 1/8 finals of Africa Cup of Nations. In the attack, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (3 goals) could return, having won the competition with Betu. Concerning the transfer window, this winter Everton did not make any signings, so no squad changes are anticipated.
With Ange Postecoglou at the helm, Tottenham has been impressive with their play and currently sit 4th in the Premier League table, totalling the same amount of points as the following Aston Villa. Over the last seven rounds, the Spurs lost only to Brighton (4:2), recorded five victories and had one draw. After defeating Manchester United (2:2), Spurs triumphed again in their midweek match against Brentford (3:2). Destini Udogy, Richarlison and Brennan Johnson turned the tide in the second half while the 'Bees' could only score on Neil Maupay's and Ivan Tony's efforts. Notably, Tottenham have been remarkable away this season: 19 points from 11 matches, 24 goals scored, while 18 conceded.
Last weekend, Postecoglou's men lost to Manchester City at home in the 1/16 finals of the FA Cup (0:1). Veliz, Sessegnon, and Solomon are still missing from Tottenham's line-up due to injuries. In addition, midfielder Lo Celso is serving a disqualification, while Son and Bissouma still remain in their national squads. Good news though: Midfielder Sarr returned to the club as Senegal was dismissed from the Africa Cup of Nations. Playmaker Maddison (3 goals, 5 assists) was back in the previous round and should start again, with Richarlison (8 goals, 3 assists) leading the attack. This winter, Spurs signed RB Leipzig's forward Timo Werner and Genoa's defender Dragusin; defenders Spence (Genoa) and Reguilon (Brentford), Eric Dier (Bayern) and winger Perisic (Hajduk) have left the club.
In the last pre-Christmas match of 2023, the Spurs won 2:1 against Everton in north London, yet the Toffees remain undefeated in five consecutive home matches against Tottenham.
Everton have had a day of extra recovery and playing at home could also provide extra support. Nonetheless, under Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham have been in excellent form and have been registering victory after victory. Absence of Son is covered ably by Timo Werner and there aren't any other significant personnel losses for the guests. My forecast - a win for the visitors with a 0 handicap.
