On Saturday the 30th of December, within the 20th around of the Premier League, Aston Villa will be hosting Burnley on their home turf. During the midweek, Unai Emery's team lost a two-goal lead, leading to a loss against Manchester United with a score of 3:2, and Vincent Kompany's charges succombed to Liverpool at home, 0:2.
Aston Villa: Martinez; Konsa, Carlos, Lenglet, Moreno; Cash, Luiz, Dendoncker, McGinn; Diaby, Watkins.
Burnley: Trafford; Vitinho, O'Shea, Beyer, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Berge, Brownhill, Odobert; Amdouni, Foster.
After a fairly successful previous season, Aston Villa is not losing pace this year, having secured a spot in the Premier League's "big four". Under Unai Emery's guidance, the Birmingham-based team recently had a chance to top the League table after a victory over Brentford (1:2). However, last weekend the yellow-blues drew against Sheffield United at home with a 1:1 score, and on Tuesday evening they lost to Manchester United at Old Trafford with a score of 3:2, despite having a two-goal advantage after the first half.
John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker took advantage of Man United's defensive mistakes in the early game, but a brace from Alejandro Garnacho in the second half unexpectedly brought Man United back into the game, with Rasmus Højlund granting Manchester all three points. With that, the 10-match unbeaten streak of the hosts came to an end across all tournaments, so it is time to redeem themselves to the fans.
After winning the Championship last season, Burnley was certainly hoping to continue delighting its fans in the elite division. Sadly, the Premier League proved to be a bit too demanding for the Lancastrians, who are now stuck in the relegation zone in 19th place, now trailing the 17th-placed Everton by five points. After losing 0:2 at home to Everton, the "Clarets" then gave themselves a glimmer of hope by beating Fulham by the same score.
However, on Tuesday evening the claret and blue had to suffer another defeat, ending up without a chance at home against Liverpool (also 0:2), due to the decisive goals from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota. However, between the scoring actions of the Uruguayan and the Portuguese, Burnley momentarily came to life and even managed to score twice, although both goals were annulled. Surprisingly, this season the Clarets often perform better away than at home, having gathered eight points in nine away confrontations.
In August, Aston Villa had no problem beating Burnley on the road, 1:3. Since 2010, the Birmingham-based club hasn't defeated the clarets at Villa Park.
Aston Villa had a rough past week, gaining only one point out of the possible six. Emery's team still holds the fourth rank in the league, however, Manchester City is closing in, and another home defeat against an outsider is simply unacceptable. Burnley, despite performing relatively well in away matches, is still significantly inferior to Villa in terms of class. My prediction is a victory for the hosts with a handicap of -1.
Aston Villa has scored 26 goals in nine home matches in the current Premier League season - the best record among all the teams. There's no doubt that the Lions will strike against the visitors at least twice on Saturday.
At their home field, Aston Villa will play offensively from the start, laying siege to Burnley's goal. My bet is on over 2.5 corners for the hosts in the first half.
In the first round match, these teams between them gathered only one yellow card, so do not expect a real brawl on the pitch. My bet is on under 4.5 total warnings.
I'll bet on an exact score of 3:1 in favour of Aston Villa.
