On Thursday, 25th January, as part of the 1/16 finals of the English Cup, Bournemouth will host Swansea on their home field. In the previous round, the Cherries defeated Queens Park Rangers with a score of 3:2, while the Swans convincingly handled Morecambe (2:0) on their home ground.
Bournemouth: Travers; Hill, Zabarnyi, Senesi, Kelly; Scott, Cook; Brooks, Billing, Sinisterra; Moore.
Swansea: Rushworth; Darling, Wood, Humphreys; Ashby, Patino, Grimes, Tymon; Paterson, Cullen; Lowe.
The match will be held at the Vitality stadium in Bournemouth.
In the first round of the English Cup, Bournemouth had to recover from a two-goal deficit to half-time to prevail over the sinking Championship side Queens Park Rangers with a score of 2:3. Currently, the cherries sit at the 12th spot on the Premier League table, a safe 9 points off the drop zone. After a languid start to the campaign, the red-blacks noticeably transformed, going seven rounds without defeat in November and December (6 wins and 1 draw).
Yet, in the last two league outings, Bournemouth capitulated to Tottenham (3:1) and Liverpool (0:4) last weekend - Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota each netting a brace in the second half. On Thursday, Iraola's charges will try to reach the fifth round of the national cup for only the third time in the last 35 years. It's important to note that the hosts have lost all three of their last home English Cup matches, including the last two against lower-league sides.
In the previous round of the cup, Swansea easily disposed of League 2's Morecambe (2:0) with the support of their fans. This Thursday, the Swans face a more complicated task - to take on a Championship representative. This season, the Welsh side languish in the bottom half of the national championship table and sit 16th overall, 10 points off the top six and 9 points clear of the drop zone.
Recently, the visitors have been experiencing a downturn: they've won just one of their last five tours, drawn twice and lost twice. Last weekend, Swansea lost at home to Southampton (1:3). The Swans have also lost their six previous FA Cup ties with Premier League clubs, conceding exactly three goals in five of them.
Swansea have not beaten Bournemouth in any of the last 12 meetings, dating back to October 2007.
Bournemouth prevailed in their only previous FA Cup encounter with Swansea 24 years ago, and the home side stands a good chance of repeating that success this Thursday. The red-blacks are hungry to redeem themselves in front of their home fans after two recent Premier League disappointments, while the visitors haven't won any of their last four away games. I expect the favourites to win with a -1.5 handicap.
Swansea have conceded nine goals in the last three matches and can't boast a solid defence. I believe Bournemouth, led by Solanke, will at least score twice (individual total over 2 goals).
Bournemouth will certainly dominate possession and attack more actively. The red-blacks will come out on top in all key metrics, including corners (handicap -2.5).
Swansea is inferior to the opponent in class and will have to play second fiddle – which means the guests will have to commit many fouls. I expect the Swans to win the bookings contest.
I'll bet on an exact scoreline of 3:1 in favour of Bournemouth.
