On Tuesday, 29th of August, within the 1/32 finals of the English League Cup, Fulham will host Tottenham on their home ground. Last Saturday, the "Cottagers" sensationally drew with Arsenal at Emirates (2:2), and Tottenham gained victory over Bournemouth on the same day.
Fulham: Rodak; Mbabu, Adarabioyo, Ream, Robinson; Reed, Lukic; Traore, Cairney, Wilson; Vinicius.
Tottenham: Forster; Emerson, Sanchez, Van de Ven, Davies; Hojbjerg, Skipp, Lo Celso; Perisic, Richarlison, Solomon.
The match will be held in London at Craven Cottage.
The "Cottagers" performed well in the Premier League last season, taking the 10th place in the table. The current campaign started fairly well for Fulham: they won an away game against Everton with a 0:1 score but faced a devastating loss to Brentford (0:3) in the second round. Curiously, Fulham managed a notable draw against Arsenal (2:2) over the last weekend. Andreas Pereira put the Whites in the lead in the first minute, then Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah turned the tide, but Joao Palhinha's 87th-minute goal made it a draw. Fulham has never won the League Cup so far.
Brazilian striker Willian remains a doubt due to transfer rumours. Additionally, summer signing Bassy is disqualified due to his removal last weekend. Captain Ream, meanwhile, is back in action. In midfield, he'll be replaced by Portuguese Joao Palhinha, who scored against Arsenal, while playmaker Andreas Pereira and Raul Jimenez will surely start. Fulham had to sell Serbian Mitrovic (Al-Hilal) during the summer.
Last season, Tottenham failed to meet fans' expectations, finishing at the disappointing 8th place in the Premier League and missing out on the European competitions this autumn. Yet Tottenham has been progressing quite well: they managed a draw against Brentford (2:2) away, followed by victories over Manchester United (2:0) and Bournemouth (0:2) last Saturday, thanks to goals from James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. Tottenham won the League Cup four times, with the last victory dating back to 2008 against Chelsea in the final.
Playmaker Maddison, who joined from Leicester during summer, has become a key figure in the attack. Brazilian forward Richarlison, scoring only one goal last season in EPL, disappoints, yet without any real competition for the centre forward position. Besides Maddison, Tottenham also signed goalkeeper Vicario (Empoli) and defender Van de Ven (Wolfsburg) over summer, both now in the starting line-up. Club's top striker Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) and winger Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo) have left the team.
Tottenham has won eight out of the last nine games against Fulham in all competitions, and they haven't lost at Craven Cottage since January 2011.
Both managers would likely rotate their squads at this early stage of the League Cup; nonetheless, the game stands as the main event of the upcoming round. Hosts started the EPL confidently despite significant losses in the transfer window, but the Spurs have been much more efficient in gaining points, deservedly ranking within the leading trio. I believe Postecoglou's side will claim victory at Craven Cottage and advance to the next round.
I'll predict a 0:2 win for Tottenham.
Midfielder James Maddison, having scored three goals in his first three matches for Tottenham – a former Leicester player has seamlessly fit into the London side's system. So, I dare to bet on his goal on Tuesday.
As the home side, Fulham will aim to control the game, but Tottenham will also regularly pose threats to the Cottagers' goal. It seems likely the teams will take at least 9 corners.
In the first three rounds of the championship, Fulham has collected 16 yellow cards – Silva's team is unlikely to let up on Tuesday, hence at least three yellow cards against the Whites are expected.
