Today, in the scope of the second day of the 1/8 finals in the African Nations Cup, the national teams of Egypt and DR Congo will compete.
Despite being one of the favourites at the African Nations Cup, Egypt's national team faced unexpected difficulties, ending all three group matches in a draw with a score of 2:2. Such a result, especially in a tournament involving African teams, is quite unusual considering the level of scoring. In the last match of the group stage, Egypt, despite their significant advantage, couldn't secure a victory over Cape Verde, conceding two goals in the last minutes of each half. The first goal was scored in the last minute of the first half, and the second - in the 49th minute of the second.
In the initial match against Mozambique, Egypt likewise drew 2:2. The loss of such a key player could seriously affect the team's future performance. At the moment, Egypt appears strong in the attack, even without Salah. However, to successfully advance to the next round of the tournament, they need to improve their gameplay, especially in defence, and find ways to compensate for Salah's possible absence in the following matches.
The Democratic Republic of Congo achieved progression to the knockout stage of the African Nations Cup, displaying results reminiscent of Portugal's performance at the 2018 World Cup. The team took second place in their group, earning 3 points in 3 matches, all of which ended in a draw, scoring just two goals. In the final group stage match, DR Congo played out a boring draw with Tanzania, not allowing a single shot on goal but creating few opportunities themselves.
The team was fortunate as Zambia suffered a defeat from Morocco, who had already advanced from the group. In the tournament's initial match DR Congo drew 1:1 with Zambia. The team had ball possession for the majority of the time and made many shots, but scored only one goal in response to Zambia's goal. DR Congo has a strong lineup, particularly in defence. DR Congo has shown they can play solid defence, but moving past the quarter-finals will be difficult.
There have been several memorable matches in the history of head-to-head encounters between Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The last meeting between the teams took place on June 26, 2019, within the African Nations Cup, where Egypt won with a score of 2:0. On March 2, 2012, in a friendly match the teams played to a 0:0 draw. On August 11, 2010, another friendly game ended in a big victory for Egypt with a score of 6:3. In a qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup on September 7, 2008, DR Congo conceded to Egypt on their field with a score of 0:1. And on June 1, 2008, in the scope of the same qualifying cycle, Egypt defeated DR Congo with a score of 2:1.
If the Egyptians show organised attacking play, it will be hard for the Congolese. It's time for Egypt not to concede 2 goals from weaker opponents, my prediction is a victory for Rui Vitoria's team.
