On Saturday, 1st June, as part of the 7th round of the Brazilian Championship, Vitória will host Atlético Goianiense. Both teams are not only settled at the bottom of the standings but also had nearly three weeks of rest after the devastating floods that hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The match will take place at Barradão Stadium in Salvador.
After winning their first second division title last year and returning to the top flight after a five-year absence, Vitória has managed only one point from their first five rounds so far. Following a 2-2 draw with Bahia at the end of April, the hosts have suffered five consecutive defeats across all competitions, losing their last three league matches and also crashing out in the third round of the Brazilian Cup against Botafogo.
After a 1-0 first-leg defeat to Botafogo, the red and blacks lost 2-1 at home just over a week ago and were eliminated in the 1/16 finals for the third time in five seasons. Coach Thiago Carpini's team will now focus all their efforts on the national championship as they are in the relegation zone in 18th place, four points behind the safe 16th spot. It is significant to note that Vitória hasn't won at home in their last four matches across all competitions.
Goianiense has had a dismal start to the season: in their first five rounds, the visitors have drawn once and lost four times, with the latest defeat coming at home against Cruzeiro (0-1) on 12th May. However, just over a week ago, the "Dragons" returned to winning ways in the national cup, beating second-division Brusque 4-2, which saw them reaching the round of 16 for the fourth time in five years.
Jair Ventura’s team currently sits 19th in the Brazilian Championship table, just one place below their upcoming opponents. Fans should note that the visitors have played reasonably well on the road in 2024, losing only one of their last ten away matches. What is concerning for their supporters is their poor attacking output: the red and whites have only scored two goals in five rounds (the second-worst record in the division) while conceding eight.
Last season, the visitors achieved a 2-3 away victory in the second division, although four out of the last five head-to-head encounters ended in a draw.
Both teams did not start the new season well and see Saturday’s match as a good opportunity to earn their first three points. Vitória can count on the support of the home crowd, but in recent weeks the hosts have been unimpressive both at home and away. Atlético already beat the red and blacks on their turf in last year's campaign, so it makes sense to bet on a double chance for Goianiense.
In four out of the last five head-to-head matches, these teams did not exceed a total of 2.5 goals. Neither side has been impressive in attack this campaign, so it's safe to predict another low-scoring outcome.
Both teams average less than 4.5 corners per game this season, so I predict a total of less than 9.5 corners.
Atlético averages 3.6 yellow cards per season, while the hosts average only 2.2. I expect a win for the white and reds in warnings.
I'll bet on a precise score of 0-0.
