On Tuesday, 11th June, in the 6th round of the qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup, Australia will meet the national team of Palestine. The hosts have won all five of their matches in the quartet and have long secured a place in the next round, while the visitors have, for the first time in their history, secured second place and will also progress further.
The match will take place at HBF Park in Perth.
Australia is one of four teams in the current Asian Football Confederation qualifying campaign to have achieved maximum points so far and have yet to concede a goal in any of their five opening matches. The hosts have long ensured their advance to the next World Cup qualifying round from first place and are playing for enjoyment. Graham Arnold’s side has lost only once in their last 12 matches in all competitions, falling 2-1 in extra time to South Korea in the Asian Cup quarter-finals.
Last week, the Australians dispatched Bangladesh away with a 0-2 score thanks to goals from Hrustic and Yengi, having previously thrashed Lebanon in March (0-5). It's worth noting that the "Islanders" conceded only one goal in their last five matches, while scoring 14 themselves! However, their home performance statistics are somewhat worse: only two victories in their last four home matches across all competitions.
The visiting team will also take to the pitch in good spirits following a series of successful results. The current Palestinian squad has already made history by reaching the knockout stages of the Asian Cup for the first time, where they were defeated in the Round of 16 by Qatar. Additionally, Makram Daboub's men have for the first time secured a place in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers, thanks to two wins and two draws in their opening five matches in Group I.
Last week, the team achieved a goalless draw against Lebanon, which was enough to ensure their progression. It's important to note that Palestine has struggled away, with only two wins in their last ten away matches. However, fans will be pleased that their team has kept three clean sheets in their last three matches in all competitions, conceding only two goals in their previous five games.
The last two encounters between these teams ended with victories for Australia with an aggregate score of 0:4.
Palestine gave Australia a hard time in their previous meeting in November when Arnold’s men almost dropped points away. However, this time it will be different. The hosts are unbeaten at home since their loss to Ecuador with a 1:2 score last March and significantly outclass the opponent in both experience and quality. The support from home fans will also play its part, hence, I predict a triumph for the "Kangaroos" with a -1.5 handicap.
Australia has not conceded in their last three matches, while scoring nine times themselves. Bet on the individual total of the "Islanders" over 2.5 goals.
The hosts outclass their opponent and will dominate the match. I bet on the individual total of Australia for corners over 5.5.
The Palestinian team will spend a lot of time defending, so the visitors are likely to take the lead in yellow cards.
I predict a 3:0 victory in favour of Australia.
